oil line check valves?

Single line from above ground tanks to burner. Have a General filter at the manifold. The lines back to each 275 gal. tank has a ball valve and swing check valve. The line runs to an oil DHW heater first then an oil furnace, which serves backup to a heat pump! This is in the Philly area and he'd rather pay for electric. When I asked about the oil DHW, he said he was told it was more efficient. The lines drop out of the tanks but rise up for the filter then drop down to the burners.
Anyway, with this setup, what's the need for the check valves with two above ground tanks with a gravity drop? Is it just because of the drop at the primary filter so it doesn't lose prime or is there another reason? The reason I'm asking is I never see check valves on oil lines around here and I'm getting ready to replace my oil boiler in a few weeks. Leaning towards Buderus G-115 with Riello, Logamatic,in & out sensors and indirect tank. Should be better than my old coal burner with non-flame retention head burner, don't 'ya think?
thanks in advance,
Bob

Useless
Remove the check valves. The line between the tanks is a equalizer. Nothing but shut off valves should be between the tanks.0
