Taco 0010 Bronze Circulator

Working at a Nursing Home. In past 2 months 170 degree loop has siezed 3 Taco 0010 circulators. All have had internal flow control check valve. Circulator is mounted motor up above circulator body. Water temp varies between 140 and 170 depending on draw of two 75 pound washing machines and diswasher use in kithcen. Water heaters are 3 AO Smith tank type water heaters. System has been in use no more than 6 months. Last night I corrected all piping issues and noticed hot loop wasn't recirculating. Circulator had siezed again. Nursing home had identical one in stock. I replaced and all was well again.

Any of youse guys have any ideas. Amp draw on new circulator installed last night was between 1.17 and 1.2 amps. Rated amps is 1.2. I didnt measure voltage but B and G series 90 circulator on same electrical circuit was behaving. This circulator recirculates the 110 degree loop.

Thanks for you help

Vic

    A few things...

I would never mount a circulator with the motor vertical. Taco does say you can do it if pressure is over 20#, but the circulator's dynamics, even in a potable water array, may have less than that pressure internally, especially at the "eye" of the impellor!

Are you replacing the entire circulator, or just the cartridge? I'd pull the cartridge and see if a slug of scale or "junk" got wedged between the rotor and stator. These puppies are wet rotor style. One crumb the size of BB gets in there and yo have instant seize-city! You may need to get into a 3-piece circulator.

Pullone apart and tell us what exactly is seized.

    Ken:

Took the one apart that I replaced Thur night. no junk in water. The cartridge itself was seized. Will repipe and replace with B&G Series 100 Bronze circulator

    Thanks for you help

    That's wierd?

If there's no "junk" in the water, what siezed the rotor in the "can"? Try pulling the rotor out of the "can" and do it over a large clean rag. Something besides wear has siezed the rotor. Even if the motor is in the least sanctioned orientation, there almost has to be a particle jammed between the rotor and field/can.

    Ken:

Thanks again for your help. This job is 88 miles from home.

Installed by our construction dept. And now I the lowly

service tech has to make it work. I am repiping the circ.

so the circ. is in the proper orientation. I really dont

care if it takes me 3 days ( an over estimate ) to do it

right the 4th time (construction has had 3 kicks at the

can). Now it will be done properly. Damn what a rant.

An aside that we are addressing at the moment. Water is 25

grains hard with the super duper ScaleBlaster electronic

"softeners". We are quoting on a 10 cubic foot resin tank

softener to protect the new heaters and piping.

    Once more Thank You

    Vic

    Thanks again for your input.

    25 grains!

    That's liquid concrete!!!!!!

Those magnetic softenors should be banned. They do not work, never did and are a hoax aimed at those who try and save a buck. Instead they destroy the piping and anything it touches.

It would be great if you could post a picture of the "junk" in the can on the most recent install, and perhaps a worse than average unit.

    Thanks for keeping us informed!

    88 miles

I would replace the plastic impella with bronze, ounce of prevention, 176 miles round trip. Cost not that bad to save the round trip. Just a thought ED N.Y.C.
  • 25 grains!?!

Add me to the list of wanting to see pics.

Will take camera along on Wednesday when I again venture north. Mifflin PA. Great hunting for 4 legged would hate to get lucky with 2 legged. Piping replaced last week has hard green deposits after only 6 months on both hot and cold lines. I Left these cutouts where the maint. super. and his boss could find them. When asked about the deposits on the inside of the pipe...I replied guess the Scale Blaster is working.

Thanks again for all the help.
