troubleshooting low-pressure steam system for higher than normal

I am troubleshooting our low-pressure steam system (fire tube boiler) for source of much higher than normal gas consumption. Could you give me some feedback on what to look for?
One thing I have been doing different this season from previous times is setting the thermostat down only 2degrees overnight instead of the usual 7-8.
Other problems may include steam leaks, faulty traps,--- I am hoping you have other suggestions as well.
Thank You,
Bruce Gorvett

First
Fix all the steam leaks. LEAKS keep the burner running longer and would start sooner .
Have the boiler checked out burner and boiler tubes may need cleaning.0
