propress question

I'll give Viega a call tomorrow or the next day, or maybe Spring, right now doing a lot of freeze up jobs , which leads me to my question.
Today I used my pipe thawing machine on some propress, I wonder if any ill effects on the o-ring. I'm not worried about warranty issues or lack of one ; )
just want to know if it's safe long term for the o-ring.
I must say it sure is nice to repair a section of pipe with some PP couplings with visible ice plug, two minutes and done !! Too bad can't use PP on baseboard though :(

I'm aware of the advice about not using PP on baseboard, however, we have done it quite a few times with no problems to date. All of these were situations where a soldered repair was either too time consuming or just flat out impossible. So far so good. The gauge of the tubing used in BB is a joke and it REALLY conforms/deforms to the PP fitting when pressed, but we haven't had a single leaker. The issue with BB is that the tubing is so thin that it folds and buckles instead of adapting to the shape of the press. I wouldn't be scared to do it in a pinch.0 -
dang it!!
I wish I would have known BB and PP works without leaking.
Could have saved me a bunch of time .
Anybody know about pipe thawing affecting o-ring?0 -
Logic dictates Captain........
That if the frozen section of pipe contains ice it would also contain water as it thaws. Said section of pipe would therefore be unable to reach a temperature of over 212* at atmospheric pressure. Therefore the o-ring should be safe provided overly vigorous application of heat is not used.0 -
pp on bb
I have used PP on baseboard and had only one leak.
I tried to crimp the fitting again but it did not work.
I trust solder more since the PP joint only leaked when that zone circulated.
But on that same run of BB the rest of the PP joints held.
And it was a good looking press, I cut the connection in half with a new blade on the sawzall.0 -
Wondering...
It was my understading that Propress fittings don't leak. No matter what comes out - if there is not a visable puddle on the floor they don't laek.
I believe that is Viega's position (I believe -well documented). There was a rather long thread on this site about this... Great pictures and Viega's official response as well.
So I've got to ask... When you say they don't leak. Are you using Viega's deffinition of a leak.
Or my definition of a leak which says that any sign of fluid outside the fitting is a indicates a leak.
Inquiring minds want to know...

Or
Scooter Libby's definition of a leak. ( sorry )
A puddle of water, pressure drop in system, if make up valve shut. are my definitions.
But you bring up a good point, what if you installed glycol and had PP on BB,
seems like asking for trouble.
Thanks for the Logical 'splaination, Steve, full warp speed ahead !0 -
propress
Ihave also been using the propresson baseboard. I have not had a problem to date. No leaks.0
