Im in a small company, and when i ask my boss what nozzle we can change the unit to, to make the flame better he just says so and so, and "oh to adjust the air you will just see after time when it needs the adjustment". we dont use a bacharack kit to adjust anything its pretty much a change filter and nozzle basis, vacuum on a maintenence call. i want to know more about this. i feel im at this point where i want to know so much more and no ones giving me the help....should i scrap the very small business to the more "commercial" business? are there any books out there like the pumping away and steam books that would help me?

In Mass it is the law that you must perform a combustion test any time you alter combustion. replacing a nozzle, or adjusting air would be altering combustion.
You really need to be using testing equipment on every call, preferably a digital meter to monitor Carbon Monoxide as well as other combustion processes.
If your company does not use testing equipment , I would definately find another more professional company. You wont learn anything there.
As far as what nozzles to use, each burner manufacture specifies specific nozzles for specific burner models, and boiler combinations. Id take a look over at the beckett, carlin, and riello webistes and print out some nozzle spec charts, or have your local supplier provide you with those charts.
- Good luck!

are absolutely correct as to the testing required and where to find info. Myself not knowing your level of experience regarding nozzles, perhaps this will be a start.

Great that you want to know what & why?
what the others have said is true, where ever you buy your nozzles now should have books for Beckett, Carlin, etc. with listings of nozzles spec's for all tested units. These books are free to boot.0
