    Webster Vapor Vacuum System

I am looking for some detailed information in refrence to an old Webster Vapor Vacuum system. I have a client who has an HB Smith oil fired boiler that was running 6lb pressure and was blowing water out of what looks like a cleanout canister above what looks like a boiler return trap. The canister is feed from the steam header with 11/2"pipe and then drops into the boiler return trap. I have looked into the system in Mr, Holohan book the Lost Art but it does not give much information on the operation and workings of the system.
Does any body have any information for me. I have worked on many vapor vacuum systems and this is the first time I have come across the Webster System. The house is heating fine and I have lowered the pressure on the boiler which has stopped the leak but I want to know about the parts before I take anything apart.

    Hi Scott,

Does the system have a vacuum pump to create the vacuum? If not, then check out the Library section of this site, upper right. Check under "steam heating", scroll down to "Warren Webster...", go to page 3. See if that diagram matches what you see on-site. I'll be glad to explain.

    Best regards, Pat

Might the canister be the receiver? I assume the dry returns dump into it, and it into the return trap. If water comes out of it, the float is sunk, and the BRT is dead. Drop the pressure. That system is designed to run on 8 ounce of pressure, without the vacuum.

    Post some pictures.

  • Scott, that's a strainer

I see these a lot on Websters. If the gasket is shot, and you can't find a replacement, some red hi-temp silicone should work.

Thanks for your help. Located the drawing in the library and it looks some what the same. Will check the jobsite again. The part leaking appears to be a strainer basket feeding the boiler return trap.

Thanks for the info. Looks lite it is a strainer baket feeding into the boiler retun trap. There is a seperate vent trap that the dry returns enter. Thanks for your input
