solar expansion tanks

Hey Bill..... Size according to volume of system and BTU/hr output. EX: 4' x 10' flat plate capacity = 1 gal. @ 5000 BTU/hr plus system piping. Got to your charts and viola! #15.
Just remember the fact that a system in the off mode during a hot summer day can reach higher than design temps (and pressures). If you size exactly on BTU output and volume only and are right at design size you could have problems.
That is why we tend to oversize our x-tanks.

solar expansion tanks
wondering how to correctly size an expansion tank for a solar system ? i am not sure of max/min temps or pressures, also do most use regular extrol or would the liner in a potable x tank be preferred ? thanks0 -
FWIW,
Viessmann uses a special tank with a different kind of bladder material that is more heat/glycol resistant than a regular extrol, IIRC.0 -
Bill....
When Constantin and Andrew speak, I listen.
Both Caleffi and Viessmann make top of the line gear; those temps and chemistries in solar/glycol systems can be unreal! Go with the best.

Bill , post #2...
Call or Email your manufacturer of choice (or go through your sales rep) to get the engineering done; that is what they do for a living. Good luck.
