The instructions must be followed on the can! Whatever it says, do it!

The first mistake is the one we all made when we erroneously assumed this emergency "fix" was probably going to stop a leak in the first place, with more than a 20-50% chance of success - and...

100% certainty it would clog the entire system with "gunk" when all is said and done.

If the can says to put in X-cup-fractions for a given BTU input boiler, we automatically put in the entire can - right?

Most contractors can do a one-day replacement boiler. Will it be done in one day? Hell no. But you will have heat that night. On the morrow, the contractor will come back and do the TSP treatment, final skim, insulation, replace all the vents, insulate the pipes and dial in the burner as needed, check for leaks, dial in the presure and LWCO settings, etc.

In the mean time, space heaters, your oven, and a good fire place may reduce the pain and suffering a tad. Leave the water taps cracked a hair so the pipes won't freeze and grab the extra blankets.

If any one has ever used this oatmeal to stop a steam boiler leak please tell us if you know how long you are supose to run it through the boiler.

Our plumber said he wants to crank it on manual max to build up presure for 5 to 10 hours and some one else told us just simmer it for an hour or 2.

IS THEIR ANY THING TO WATCH OUT FOR SO IT DOES NOT CLOG UP THE WHOLE SYSTEM.

Unfortunately, the can does not say how long to run the boiler with the sodder.

Have you actually used it yourself before on a steam boiler? And know that Hercules will gunk up everything, even if it's used right?

Will there be a way for us to de-gunk later? Or do you think our pipes will get ruined?

We're trying to get a loan for a new boiler now, so we need to try somthing fast in the meanwhile.

Even if it's used right!

You leave it in forever. Once it does its stuff, it cannot be removed. Nor would you want it to come out. If it comes out, the boiler will leak again.

If the leak is a hairline crack, a small dose may do the trick without foulking the system. If a pin-hole the size of a piece of thin spaghetti, you may get lucky. Anything bigger than that is a waste. Borrow a few heaters, do the oven thing and if gas, be EXTREMELY careful of leaving it on when sleeping. First thing in the am, with an eye on it is okay, just to take the chil off.
