rheem 7200 series furnace

Maximum frustration level has been exceeded. This morning I observed the igniter glow and go out as the gas came on. This has been a problem for years. Technicians have replaced the board, vacuum switch, and igniter. Yesterday the tech cleaned the circular burner and said that the heat exchanger looked ok; vacuum and voltage was ok. My sledge hammer is ready! Any advice?

Is this the round drum style heatexchanger?

If it is, then the heat exchanger has to be tested for failure. When the drum style heat exchangers fails, the pressure switch will not make once the gas valve is energized, hence the ignition then poof quits.

Check with a Rheem dealer on warranty or have the furnace replaced.

    thanks, Wayne

  • The unit may be running with

a poor ignition condition and combustion problem allowing for higher than normal temperatures at the igniter. Placing a ceramic spacer on the igniter will help to dissipate some of the temperature. This unit should also have a combustion test run to insure proper combustion.

Finally it has been my practice to eliminate the igniter as a sensor if that is the case and go to a seperate sensor properly located at the last burner to receive gas.

These heat exchangers have also been a problem so it should definitely be tested as it will cause problems with pressure switch operation if the integrity is broken on the HE.

    check the

polarity at THE BOARD!, never mind incomming at the connections. I have seen reverse polarity work for a bit, then the exact same problem as you describe. Check the L1 terminal to GROUND, you should get 120, if you get 0 then the polarity at the board is reversed and needs to be corrected.

    RGED?

Rheem will give your dealer $375 off a new furnace if a drum furnace is bad.
