I have a request hot rod. Could you get a shot of a indirect up to temp, then draw some hot water off. Would like to see the stagnation diff, and coil diff.
Question on your camera....... can you see the shot b4 taking or are you blind until exposed?
I need one of those!

can you do a whole house heat loss calculation with that?
Hi, I've been following some of the current discussions
on heat loss calculation, and it seems to me that the
methods employed are not a whole lot better than using
dice or a dartboard. What if you could take infrared photos
of the whole structure, perhaps with a calibated emitter
in the picture, and then have a computer count up the numbers of each color of pixel?

someone smarter than
me probably could apply this data.
Sure does show the leaks in my shop! And my reflection as I take the picture.

what kind of camera?
Hey, are you using one of those Sony video cameras that
they quit selling because you could use the infrared cap-
ability to see under peoples clothes?

off at the mall taking pictures...
Hmmm... no answer... I guess he must be off at the mall
taking pictures...

Wrong
Jim - and anyone else who is interested in infared (or near infared) photograph.
The camera that is used to take the picture of the boiler - and heat loss from a building is a very expensive camera. Typically in the $8,000 - $10,000 range; which does not include accessories. The way these cameras are set-up does not lead to the "see through" types of pictures you are discussing; althoug I admit they probably could be modified to do that (not sure I've heard of anyone doing that though..)
The type of photography that can under ideal conditions (note I said ideal - really ideal) see through certain types of light clothing can be done for a lot less.
Yes, some of the older sony cam-corders could be used that way by adding a specific type of filter (the new sony cameras cannot without modification be used for that). People into commercial photography - or security functions - have available to them many cameras and accessories that can do that.
Reports are, though, that the few pictures you see on the internet (often of a maniquen) are staged pictures under ideal lighting conditions after the people have experimented for the best filter and technique to get that picture. Just shooting a picture of people on the street - or on the beach - usually does not turn out so well - althoug I will conceed that some people have acquired the right expensive equipment and mastered the techniques for certain lighting conditons.

It's a Flir EX300
about 15 grand worth. www.flir.com to see how these things work. They build mostly military stuff but are building entry level cameras for contractors, roofers insulators, utilities, etc.

Show us what it looks like with the cover ON...
Be interesting to see what effect the hot combustion chamber has on the cover during operation.
BTW, FWIW, FLIR stands for Forward Looking Infra Red. Now hows THAT for a mouthful of alphabet soup:-)
I wonder what backwards looking infra red looks like:-)
FLIR also leases these units.
Did you borrow this one from your utility again HR?

read all about it
These are the cameras that the cops were using to bust
people for growing pot in their attics, until judges started deciding that it was bit too intrusive, since they
could also see what room people were in, right through the
walls.
A fair amount of this gear is for sale on Ebay for >$10,000, you might be able to pick up an older used unit
for >$5000.
Read all about it at:

I still want to know if you could use thermal imaging to
do a more accurate heat loss estimate.

The Contender vent
with the machine running at 160F Notice the cold intake blending with the exhaust.
Jim, Flir offers a bunch of different user built software. their scientific package sounds like it could crunch all the pics and data for the answer you are asking. List price $14,950.00 for the software!
Dave, I have an uninsulated SuperStor indirect I will connect and film tomorrow. Same with the case on pics.

Hi Hot Rod!
Not to pick nits, but you might want to adjust the emissivity setting on the camera as you scan different materials to ensure you get the right temperature. I see that your e setting is fixed at 0.96, this web site suggests 0.91-0.92 for PVC, other settings for other plastics.0 -
Cover on at 180F setpoint for
about 20 minutes of run time.
