I always suggest replacing the entire length, but sometimes the owner doesn't want to. It is their call and their liability too.

    goofball flooring guys

I was busy today. Running from one call to the next. At the same time making calls setting up work for next week, and then I get a call from one of the construction sites....Hey Cosmo we need you quick!!!

The flooring guy tried to explain to me that my Uponor multicor was stabbed while he was trying to use the screwdriver in the picture to align the board. I still wonder though.

I was the one left smiling however, I gave him a price to repair it, had him sign it and then made him pay up when I was done....

What also helped getting paid was that I blocked him from running anywhere by parking my big E-450 right up on his bumper. And I carried my favorite hammer around for no apparent reason......

    Cha-ching

    Enjoy the pic

also of note; I called and mentioned to the homeowner to ask his flooring contractor how he expects to dry off the water that leaked between the warmboard and the hardwood that had already been installed......hmmmmm. No that won't warp, it will be fine sir....

That has happened to all of us. Most times I dont even bill them I try and work with all the other subs as best I can. But sometimes they drive me nuts also. I had one (so called the best flooring guy in the industry) hit my 5/16 lines 9 times in a 200 SF room. Then he told the HO I was out of line with my bill and that he didnt even make that much on the job.

I used to be everyone's best friend

Then I woke up. I have bills to pay.

If I were on the site anyway, and/or if I could have done the repair later in the day, I might have done the repair for the cost of the multipress coupling.

But the homeowner/builder begged me to go right away. I was there in an hour. I left a boiler replacement to complete the repair. If that wasn't enough the tubing IS exposed, can't say it was buried or out of view.

I spent 3 hours on this concern, do I not deserve something? I charged him for a travel charge fee, an hour's labor, and the fitting. Not bad in my book.

I use my own common sense when deciding when and when not to charge. When I am working on a job, and because of my mistake a repair man has to drive over in an emergency situation with not even a few hours notice/or even leeway to wait for him to finish what he is working on I would fully expect to pay for my mistake.

To give the flooring guy some credit he did not balk, or complain about paying. He even helped me by opening and closing manifold loop valves to help me purge the air from the system.

    Correct me if I'm wrong....

But didn't H.R. show a home made "shoe" that could be attached to a nail gun, that made the nails drive into "toungue and groove" flooring, not long ago?(is 2 years ago long?)

I believe that it made the nails drive at an angle that would connect the flooring, and miss the tubing to within better than 1/4 inch.

Maybe we need an update Hot Rod? How about the "turns"? can they be protected also?

I may not have the best memory, but I seem to recall this. Chris

I've obviously been spending too much time at TheOnion.com. You couldn't have set up a better shot, Cosmo. Reminds me of the night I nailed that deer right at the deer crossing sign.

    Thanks for noticing!

My first shot was the other way around and the text was upside down. I almost walked away when I looked at the writing, and couldn't pass up the irony so I walked around and took another picture.....

    Deer crossings

This is a real problem in Maine. You would think that the DOT would place the signs in a safer section of the road to tell the deer to cross there.

Remember the doctor telling you should never stick anything smaller than your elbow in your ear? Why in the heck is a flooring guy trying to "align" the flooring with a 5/16" blade. I too never charged for repairs on my larger jobs. Hey, accidents happen. That is until I decided to bill the other subs for obviously blatant idiotic stupidity.

i hate to say this buh...i often feel when you are doing good

work ,some yo yo seems to think it is their mission ,inspired by God ,to ruin it...now ,if you had draped the c pex all over the place instead of the frost pex in pre determined heat emitters... somehow that would have no punctures from the carpenters sheetrockers sheet metal, or electricians...:) i am going pessimistic again..:) sorry...:)

Cosmo, That warmboard looks like some Cool stuff. I'v worked with quick track and pretty much though it was the best thing going, low mass high conduction good nail base etc. But this warmboard seems even better, high purity thick aluminum as close as possible to the surface, structural sublooring. I'm guessing your into other aspects of building besides hydronics. In my experience with quick track some layouts can become tricky especially when manifolds are above the floor plain. Seems like this product would require some good preparation if it was being handed off to carpenters not familiar with tubing lay out. How do you deal with these issues. Obviously the flooring guy was a bit loose with your tubing. It would make me wonder about grazing nail blows, the ones that don't leek right now, or leek so slow that it will be a month or two before the stain shows up in the sheet rock or the floor begins to buckle. That said, accidents happen and you should probably be pressurizing your systems with air. if you can't trust your flooring people to be more careful. You must have had to carve out the warmboard for the coupling right? I guess that's not so hard if your good with a circular saw. never love to see a fitting covered though. I'v seen a multi-core fitting leek. Is the panel sized specifically for wirsbow multi core , I use viega fosta pex and I think it's sized a little different. please let me know what working with this product is like. it seems like something you would have delivered by a lumber yard not a plumbing supply house. What sort of business do You purchase this from?

    questions

The homeowner/builder picked the Warmboard product before he found me. He purchased the Warmboard and had it delivered, and his framer and I went over the layout that Warmboard provided. The framer (who by the way works with his three sons and is also doing all the finish carpentry trim) laid it out per specs, and framed the rest of the house. Then I installed the tubing, and yes I had to make custom grooves ... everything was spelled out in the instructions from Warmboard. After installing all the tubing and manifolds I filled with 80PSI of air until the homeowner/builder wanted the heat on for the other trades such as the spacklers, painters, etc. The whole time the Warmboard floor was covered with 1/4" luan plywood. That is until the hardwood flooring was being installed.

The warmboard is the best product of it's kind IMHO, and it was easy to get in touch with the factory with any questions I had.

    I asked the Homeowner

The damage part was cut, and then the two ends were routed into the joist bay underneath where I installed a Multipress coupling.

Because the basement will be left unfinished this coupling will be accessible.

I did advise that the best thing to do would have been to replace the entire loop, but with all of the hardwood already installed he didn't want to remove the flooring.

The Hammer part reminded me of

A time when Dad chased around a builder with a hammer when he was trying to stiff him out of some money. I was too young to witness this, still a couple of guys alive who remember this fondly. And Dad got paid too!
