steam vents

Guys,
I want to change some of the radiator vents in a steam system. I had put one of the vari-vent valves on one but dont like it. It seems to hiss away while the steam is coming up and doesn't really close.
I was wondering what vents others have used which are quiet and efficient? Also should the vents for steam baseboard be the same as vents for the cast iron radiators?
