Guy calls me" Hey!my unit heaters leaking...and my boiler wont go"... well, do you have fuel oil in the tank?...sure theres fueloil in the tank...ok...so i go out there..

its like 58 below or something o kinda wonderful...his shop is freezing the unit heaters froze...the boilers cold as ice..ice should be so lucky :)..

am into bang make boiler go ... thaw out valves to close off the unit heater and zones.. strip the control off and stick two hoses in a gallon of fuel...

next day..guy calls back....same thing... so i dash out tell his daughter that you need to go get fuel oil and put it in the tank...

i end up going and buying it myself...then comes the good part...he needs a new boiler now...so i go get the guy a Loaner boiler till he gets a few dollars together to buy fuel..next thing my boiler cracks...then its all my fault...it is night time so i think..ok i go home..this guy making me feel real bad...go out to my truck , he closes Shop ...i go back in to pick up some tool i left..the guy was turning the BOILER off at nights in 55 below!...that is why he was having the difficulties with the heating system...every evening he would turn the boiler off and every morning no matter what the temp in the shop turn it back on... so i asked him..is this what you have been doing every time i have left ..Sure,...i always turn the boiler off..it stays warm in here..till morning...you be suprised at the things that you see and never realise what people are doing...every time i happened to leave i noticed the lights went out and it never occured to me that he was turning off the boiler ...

if you ask me does night set back save you money?....guess what my answer is.?

i came and went bak and forth to this building many many times...and i figure that it cost megga bucks to use his control stradgey :)

Go ahead... Think about it,..You got Time.

    Radiant night set back

Does any one have any information on radiant heat night set back? I know it shouldn't be done you usally have out door reset but I have a customer who thinks it will save him money but I try to tell him I takes longer to heat up the floor to design after being set back. This is a garage with over head doors I the heat lost is big when moving in and out the trucks in the morning. I think it is going to be worst for his mechanics?

    Thanks Larry

The only way to convince someone like that

is to let them do it, suffer waiting for comfort (or waiting in discomfort) then pay the bill for the trouble. When his mechanics walk out after arriving to a cold slab Monday AM...

High mass is less of a candidate for setback by far. Good control (PID monitoring slab temperature and judicious injection over time) will cost less than letting it cool then starting all over again.

The only thing high mass has going for him in this case is the time it will take to cool toward ambient. But that also means a lot of time to recharge the slab.

    Dare him to try it.

We had a guy that insisted on turnng

down the radiant floor in his bathroom at night would get up and turn up t-stat and called us, his complaint in his words "it's just to chilly on my willie in the morning". Sujested to either leave it alone or get a set back t-stat. Nope would not hear of it his routine was to get up turn up bath t-stat take his morning pee and have heat radiating then and there, so he had us install a panel rad close to the sink and now he and his willie are happy.

Have him set back A LITTLE BIT, instead of a lot--no more than 5 degrees or so. Also, if he uses a stat with adaptive intelligent recovery, the thermostat will compute each morning what it needs to do to have the temp at the desired temp at the desired time. Whatta deal. The old Honeywell T8600's and the new TH8110s and TH8320s do this, for around $100.00.

This works great also for making sure there's hot water going through a floor first thing in the morning when those bare toes hit the bathroom floor. If the system's coming out of setback at a particular time, there's going to be hot water there at that time.

Carol this is great stuff for us tekies

but some people are so set in their ways that it just has to do what they want it to do as they see it.
  • Unless...

he also has an ODR on his heat source, in which case it will be a losing proposition... The two logics do not communicate, consequently, the AIR thermostat will wake up at 1:00 in the AM in an effort to hit its target.

I know this from personal experience...in my own home:-)
