The programmable thermostat you installed may not be compatible with the system, especially if it calls for many short cycles from the boiler.

I've had great luck with the Aube TH148LE-P. It has a setting for steam systems and "learns" how the house heats so it can program itself for the correct anticipation.

My customer has problems with banging pipes when she uses her programable thermostat. we set it back to manual and the problem went away.
What causes this problem should the programing be set differently?

The stat itself has nothing to do with the banging. With steam systems, too deep a setback isn't a good idea, maybe 5 degrees as a starting point. The "flywheel" effect of a steam system is considerable, and deep setbacks will produce comfort problems. Banging or "water hammer" is caused by many things, if it occurs when the system is in setback, I would suspect that condensate is collecting in the system where it shouldn't be, then when the stat comes out of setback, the steam is moving that condensate and causing the banging. Any Honeywell stat, programmable or not can be used with your steam system. TH8110 Touch Screen, TH6110 push button or TH4110 basic; just set for 1 cycle per hour, per the instructions. TH5110 Digital non-programmable or the new T87K or N round, mercury-frees will also work, again, just set for 1 cph. Go to www.customer.honeywell.com for literature or wiring diagrams.
