Correct sizing of main steam vent, Please Help.

I recently looked at a job where customer has six radiators which only heat adequetely on mild days. On cold days such as now the radiators in question will take three to four hours to heat at all. Boiler was replaced 1 1/2 years ago. The boiler is a Burnham IN-8 with 2 two inch mains off the top, properly connected to a hartford loop however, return lines are connected above water level. The other radiators connected on main line #2 heat up quickly. There is a new Vent-rite #75 at end of main in question. There are no other radiators on said main, leading me to believe that main vent is not large enough to vent air quick enough.

The piping in question is 80' of 2 steel.

How do you properly size main line vents?

    Thank you in advance.

    whenever you suspect

a bad vent, just take it off and see if things work without it..obviously it would need to be put back till its replacement is on hand lest one wants a turkish steam bath.

    Bruce and Gerry,
    Thank you for your help.
I just ordered the reference. Somehow in my haste I did not see it before and was wondering where all this wonderful information was to be found. I obviously have a lot to learn when it comes to this beautiful art of steam heat. I learned this trade under a bunch of very well vearsed individuals, however this seems to be something that gets lost by the wayside. Hopefully someday with the amount of reading I just provided for myself, I may be considered one to answer a question or two on the subject.
    Until then,
    Thank You both

Gerry Gill and Steve Pajek have earned

the Living Dead Man Award for that book and the Mitzvah Award for donated the proceeds.

The thought of two grown men using a Dwyer gauge stooped over an open pipe for what must have been hours, has to be acknowledged.

That venting guide is to be found no where else. Mine is printed and laminated in my design binder which no one is to touch without gloved hands and security clearance...
