Gentlemen, tonight I resent... uh I mean resemble the beans and flatulence remark.

ok, ok TMI

But seriously the best cure for flatulent radiant concrete slabs is bean-o. Just sprinkle some in with the pour.....

I do it all the time...works great!

Ahhh, sarcasm truly is the best comedic style!

Had a call the other day

And the caller was looking for information on radiant heat. The caller informed me that they had information that if they did radiant heat in the walk-out basement of the ranch style house they were building, it would heat the entire house.

I informed them that was a misconception and that it would not work. "We have emails saying that it will!" I informed them that I'll guarantee a system to work properly for the space it's designed for and heating 2 floors with a single floor radiant system won't.

Where do people get these ideas? Forced air may do just that (I've done it before!), but not radiant.

    Not a problem Jeff

You missed the concept that the basement is heated to about 90 F so that the main floor can be at a comfy 78 F. You also need some gravity flow air ducting and old style Air inlet and downflow grates.

Works great for those who like to have someplace warm to escape to... (or cool - depending on what floor they like to live).

    First house

I ever owned (us and the bank) had a wood stove in the basement. Previous owner had cut 10X4 holes in the floor of the upstairs (and put in floor registers) and would fire up the wood stove to heat the entire house. He said it never worked as well as he thought it would, but I put an old squirrel cage blower from a furnasty to move the air around in the basement. It worked some better....

    Selling beans

Sell them magic radiant beans. Tell them to sprinkle the beans in the floor before the concrete pour. Then watch the tubing grow.

    Jeff,

We do it all the time.

The secret is in the venting.

Simply vent the boiler into the basement of the main house! It does get a tad damp, but then you simply install a de-humidifier.

Just make sure the check clears before the family dies. That is a key item.

    I've heard that

quite a few times. "Heat rises" is always thrown in there as well.

It can be difficult getting the folks to understand why it won't work.

Not sure where it started though.

    Where to buy

I believe you can get the beans from an internet company that specializes in Radiant Beans. Isn't it www.radiantbeantec.com?? Everything is available online theses days. Watch the warranty. Slab Flatulence can be hazardous.

Radiant heat in a walk out basement

I have a vacation home in upper Wisconsin a 1400sq.ft. ranch. First year I had radiant heat only in the basement floor. Set the temp. at 70 put a box fan in the stairway in less than a day the temperature up stairs was 68. Out side was in the low 30's and night time was single digits. The house is super insulated with 6 inch walls and the basement was done with ICF's. Heated the house for a month like this. So will it work, possibly but getting around the box fan was a pain. I now have baseboard upstairs. The house is a modular.

I have seen it work, quite by accident,

first floor all radiant heat, isulated with 6" fiberglass batts the house stays at 68 per T-stat and the basement at 72 and the people are as happy as a pig in slop. But I guess it takes getting the insulation just right and enough tubes in the floors.

    Good Idea!

Cosmo, perhaps Beano would be in place of water treatment?

Will it take the noise out of the pipes? How much is needed?
