Indirect piping

We have to pipe an indirect and the 2 steam boiler tappings that are readily available are 3/4". The indirect (Bock 80SK) has 1" boiler connections. If we pipe the boiler piping in 1" and then reduce at the boiler to 3/4", what effect wil it have on performance/recovery, if any? The indirect is about 3' from the boiler.

Thanks in advance, Adam

Does the literature for your inderect show different GPM ratings? If you figure 4gpm for 3/4 there may be some info in the literature for that flow rate.

Otherwise, contact the manufacturer to make sure the unit is designed for a steam system (read hotter water temps)and while you have them on the phone have them fax you their preferred piping method for connecting to steam.

I would use a thermostatic mixing valve on the domestic side.

Dan has a bunch of great hot water zone off of a steam biler piping diagrams, Ill look and see if I cant get you a page number to referance.

    Try and use ...

The tankless coil instead of steam boiler water. The rust, scale and junk in steam boiler water, regardless of which tap(s) used are problematic; even with wye strainers.

If the steamer has a tankless coil opening, spend the $150 for a new one and chuck the "plate." If already there, use it as the source and keep the junk in the boiler, not racing around your new wet rotor circulator.

20 years from now, the coil will be running well. If you pump boiler water, you'll be married to the job until you move.

If there is no coil plate or coil already there, and you have no choices other than the two traps you have, be prepared to lose the customer after a year or two. It'll work, but you inherit the history of the inherent rust in the system.

    Always.
