Strange Smell

Heating System

I hae an all electrical heating system. My unit is really old. Last night I noticed that each time the heat comes on there is a smell sort of like oil or bug spray. Any idea what this maybe?

Are they

oil filled radiators? Often filled with mineral oil, a minor leak can make such a smell. Just a hunch.

Electric baseboard if that is what you have, run at pretty high temperatures. If you have used any cleaning solutions or solvents (new housekeeper not quite acquainted with the setup?), something might have been sprayed on the elements or entrained up from the floor.

Is it happening throughout or in one room?

Electric heat

Sounds like some component in the system is overheating. Maybe wire insulation, motors, cabinet insulation, relay or control construction materials, etc. It could be caused by loose connections, low voltage, low airflow, or anything else that can cause overheating. Maybe something fell onto the electric heat coils. It is a fire hazard. Please have it checked out. Hot wires or components near combustible materials is not a good scenario. The problem could be in the walls. Again, it is hazardous. Don't let it go without a resolution.

Wondering if u have a male cat or dog that not being let out often?

I had my neighbor change a light bulb with a fabric softener cloth from the dryer. Every time the light bulb was on the smell came back. Keep looking & good luck.
