Prepping for a new softner

Hopefully there is shut off valves on the water softner. If that is the case then water main will not have to be shut down. If the main is to be shut down, your boiler will be fine left running. If you don't have valves on the softner now would be a good time to install some especially if a new softner is to be installed. 15 years on a sears water softner is good to me, could be time for a new one.

Getting a new water softner, what to do with boiler
I am having troubles with my 15 year old Kenmore water softner and I am having someone come out Monday to take a look at it. What preparations should I make with the boiler? If he has to turn the water main off, I would assume I turn the water off at the boiler too, is this correct? Also, if he turns the water off, is it safe to run the boiler? Any suggestions would be great
Thanks
