Why might the second floor of my house be so toasty warm, yet the first floor be much cooler? The radiators on the second floor are warm/hot to the touch, yet the first floor radiators are cool or warm at best, unless I really "crank up" the thermostat.

    Is it a gravity HW system?

    Is it all on one zone?

    If the floors are zoned separately I would start there with circulator operation, venting, all the usual common sense things like power to the circulator or control valve...

    If it is a gravity HW system it is common for upper floors to heat first (higher differential pressure). Orifice plates may have existed originally and tossed out over time if the radiators were moved for painting for example.
