thermostatic traps

I'm a total novice with radiator heat. Our system at work seems to be running inefficiently, and our people told us to replace the steam traps. They gave us an estimate for $5700 for 25 or so traps. Is that for real? Can it really cost that much to replace traps? I've read on this site and one of Dan's books that traps should be replaced very 3-5 years-- how can this be an affordable way to heat a house?

thermostatic traps
They don't necessarily need to be replaced. They can be rebuilt by changing out the thermostatic element. I smell a rat here, but hard to say unless the traps are obsolete and no parts are available. Get a second opinion, from a steam pro.0 -
steam trap replacement
If this price is strictly for the replacment of 25 steam traps, then the price seems to be high. It is hard to say without looking at your system and knowing whether less expensive replacement rebuild kits are available for your existing steam traps. I would get another proffessional in to look at your system and give another opinion. I would also get a detailed desciption of work the contractor is going to perform for the money that you are going to be spending. Only replacing or repairing failed traps should not cost $200 per steam trap.0 -
Check out Tunstall

If it comes to replacing the guts and you are handy with a wrench (be honest now) you may give these a shot. Chances are they have a match for you.
Barnes and Jones is another manufacturer; all good. Tunstall is family run and good to deal with, nothing against the other."If you do not know the answer, say, "I do not know the answer", and you will be correct!"

Cost of doing business
I will gladly come replace or repair 25 steam traps for $5,600.00; regardless of the make or model or if they are obsolete. I live in Philadelphia but if you are located anywhere in the Continental United States, I will make a house call. I said to clarify the work to be performed and to get a second opinion from a steam heating professional.0
