    circulator pump

How can I tell if my circulator pump is working??? I don't think it is. I can feel heat in some rooms but not the room the farthest away from the heater. Can the circulator pump be changed without emptying the system?

    Got Pump?

There is a neat little tool I picked up on a keychain from Viessmann. When held to the center rear of the motor it will tell you it is rotating and in what direction. You probably do not have one; I wish you did. You wish you did!

Does it sound like it is running? You may have to place your ear right to it to hear, they can be that quiet. Try turning off the power for a few moments to let the piping cool, then turn it back on. Feel if the pipe temperature changes with that effort.

If you have to change it out, I hope you have isolation flanges or isolation valves. Otherwise you will have to drain down all that you cannot otherwise isolate.

I would never install a circulator without isolation valves.

That sounds like an awesome tool Brad! Im going to the Veissmann training in Feb 13 & 14 I'll have to ask about it!

I use a little 110v amplifier (the kind that lights up and beeps in the presance of power) to see if the circ has power, then I use a screwdriver to my ear to see if I can hear the impeller spinning.

NOBODY SELLS THEM!!!!:(. They give them away as token presents but those of us who need them can't find them. To ANYONE who has one please contact me. I even emailed the factory where they are made but they only sell in volumes of like 500 pc.
To answer your question, yep. Pump sounds like it is bad. I, too, hope you have isolation valves. If you don't, don't fret. Try to isolate the expansion tank and as much of the system as you can. If you are changing like pumps, I will remove the cartridge from the volute. It may save some headache rather than dealing with gaskets and bolts. Long stem T handle allen wrenches are key to getting the old ones out.

Perhaps we should start taking orders? I`m sure we could come-up with a logo, maybe HH.com? Where`s Dan?

    Grundfos has them also

your local rep may be a source. They work on Grundfos and B&G, alas not Taco.

They will spin even if the pump is stuck or the shaft broken, however.

    They also real solonoids. etc.

Dan did check into them a few years back, fairly pricey I believe.

maybe these manufacturers will come-up with a simple "give- away" tool that will benefit them all in the future. Besides, they have more money than we do.

    I have one from Grundfoss

I could never figure out why they work on some pumps and not others.

    Beware

As stated eariler they will still move with a broken shaft. I used mine (from Grundfus) and found a pump in a system that if I held it to the pump it just wasn't the same as the others. Took it out and shaft was busted.
Just can't rely on it 100% BUT it does help to make sure pumps are powered and running when they are supposed to.

If you do have isolation valves

start slowly closing down the discharge side one. That's about the best way to here if the pump is flowing. Or quickly turn it open, close, open, even a small circ will talk to you :)

Just remember to fully open the valve again.

do you own a Wiggie ...?

if you have a Red looking circ, look where the motor bumps up to the pump...if it is a maroon colour pump it may have a screw that is used to release air/ prove cooling remove it turn the power off get a skinny screwdriver send it to the end of the shaft push in on that and turn the shaft with the screw driver...then bump the pump...if you see water or fluid leaking out of the hole you can easily determine its ability to function :) how about silver or bronze black or green pumps > :)and well you might ask :)multi / ammeters come in handy :)

long time ago grundfos used to give the spinny toy out in the circ box ...kinda like a cracker jack gift...:) except it actually does something :)

if your wanting to change out a circ ,it is simple enough....just depends if you are in possession of your hip waders and Large wrench:))forget i said that ...:)

if you Did have a 4' pipe wrench....nah...forget that part about a 4' wrench too... the hip waders might be good though...a rubber hammer and a couple wrenches and a screwdriver....i can see now, that i would never be able to write the installation guides for circ pumps for home depo...

    circulating pump

are pumps supposed to be in return lines pushing water through boiler out the top to the rooms?

the pumps dont push away from boiler, they pull the water towards it.

If you are not getting heat to the furthest radiator the pump may be O.K. but the system may be air bound. Did you bleed that radiator that is the furthest from the boiler?
