How do I check the valve?

The valve stem can be removed to check inside the valve. I have seen many old valves where the disk has broken off and fallen down on the seat. This could cause a one pipe rad not to drain and then bang (water hammer) when steam comes on.
Removeing the stem can be tricky if you have never done it before, might be better left to a Pro.
Good luck,
Jim

How do I check the supply valve?
Hi,
Wow, I love this website! I have water hammer in a one-pipe system. The noise seems to be coming from just one radiator and it seems to be close to the radiator (i.e., I don't think it's from the basement pipes - I think it's up in the room, which is on the 2nd floor). I've pitched the basement pip and the radiator itself, but there's still a lot of loud noise. I've replaced the vent (I've tried several - that doesn't seem to be the problem). The supply valve is open all the way. From what I've read, the next thing to check would be the valve itself - perhaps it is broken or loose or something. But I have no idea how to do this. I'm just a homeowner with not very much fix-it experience. I just kind of learn as I go. Any suggestions? Do I unscrew the entire valve and just kind of poke around?
Thanks for any suggestions anyone out there might have.
