I recently looked at a job that the homeowner wanted to replace a oil fired hwh, however the hwh is in some what of a hole with only a hatchway to enter it..almost wanted to walk away but my dads words always ring in my head "DONT QUIT" . So in an attempt to try and get the job I discussed with the owner an instant hwh. Ihave read quit a bit about them .I dont know If the 1st one I installed about 10 years ago a MYSON Direct vent was not perfected but when it got cold the heat exchager froze infact split . Fortunatly that was at my own shop! They have three full bathrooms and are looking for the most efficient way to do this.. no wet boiler only furnace. My thinking is this might be a good application . Have exterior wall in my pit, propane tank could easily be placed outside. My biggest question is will it give me enuogh hot water?Would I need two or three?I want to get the job but am I asking for trouble?

    yes - trouble

if you are installing for a customer you need to answer these question yourself. go back and do ALL 'your' homework here. you and the customer will be far better off.

off hand, adding a propane tank just to heat water doesn't sound that economical. why would the customer want another bill each month? ele bill, oil bill, propane bill, doesn't sounds wise to me. making this too complicated.

ps I consider 'instant hot water heaters' those little things that sit under the sink. therfore instant.

    Maybe....

You can find "spaces" close enough to each bath/H.W. use area to use multiple units ?

My biggest hurtle so far with these instantaneous units has been the time it takes for the hot water to get to an outlet. Once fired and doing its job, no problems....but if the heated water has to go through 100' of pipe to get there...big problem.

If the runs are over 40', I would be looking to use more than 1 to get the water there in (what the homeowner would consider) a speedy time.JM2C Chris

    OH boy!

ok, I'm gonna step in it a bit. If you can make it fit, go with a Bock 32E oil fired. (This from a big tankless guy!) You already have the oil and the tank!) Try to make that work first!

    Propane in a \"pit\"

If that heater is to go in a pit it should not be fired with propane because of accumulation hazards.

    when looking at on-demand...

you need to look at exactly what fixtures there are. If you go to www.rinnasolutions.com you can use the output of the 2520FFU and size the system using the calculator function. I suspect that you can do this job with on-demand. Based upon J's post on pipe length I suggest that you use the charts & calc section and you can figure time delay to hot water at the tap. These units are so compact that you can probably find a better location inthe house for the water heater. If the new water heater is to last for many years, why not position it for best performance rather than convenience of installation. After all, you won't needto use the chimney with dv. Why let it determine the location for the waterheater.

Plumdog is correct, you can not put a propane fire appliance in a pit.
