Saving the world once again form evil doers!
Went to a friend's house for a party one night. Could help but notice the one pipe steam system at his house. Middle of the party I'm wandering around looking at the raditors, and of course made my way, quietly to the boiler room. My girlfriend thinks that I have a mental illness about things like this, but I know I can find sympathy on the Wall about this. Anyway, house is a duplex, and as I wandered around, I noticed that very few radiators had any air vents on them, if they had any they were vacuum vents. Looking at the boiler, I noticed that near boiler piping was in correct, but one thing at a time. As I looked up at the end of the main, there was a vertical shank 1/8" radiator valve serving for the main vent! SAY WHAT!!
So I picked some Gorton #4,#5, and #6's and ordered some
Gorton #1's for the main. Steam main is not that long, hence the smaller vents, (I have the charts to go by of course!). I'll let you know the final results as I go along. Apparently the landlord doesn't care what he pays or what he charges the tennants0 -
I have seen a lot of old jobs with undersized vents. My favorite is when they tap a 1/8" hole in the return at the drop to the boiler and put in an angle radiator vent.
There fuel bills must have been stupid.
your probably saving them a ton of money. When it burned coal the small vents didn't matter as much because the coal didnt turn off.

Must be nice...
to throw money out the window like that.
What does Mr. Holohan say? "This will cost $800.00"

If the radiator vent
is a Gorton #D, that's OK- it will vent about the same as a Gorton #1. This can be a life-saver when you don't have the headroom for a #1- assuming that venting rate is correct for the main in question. But it should be installed at the end of the steam main, not on the dry return.
