Prestige - DF

Dan Foley
Dan Foley Member Posts: 1,265
We installed a Prestige 110 and a Smart 80 tank. We replaced 14 of the old convectors with Burnham Duo-Rads and re-wired new controls. The Carrier A/C and chiller barrel were scrapped and replaced with a Unico Uni-Chiller. The system is manually changed from heating to cooling. We gave the HO the option of auto change-over using motorized valves but apparently we blew up the budget - maybe next year. -DF

    Before..

This is one we are wrapping up in Fairfax. The system is a two-pipe chilled water/hot water system utilizing wall mounted convectors. The old Hydro-Pulse has been nothing but problems and the old 1960's vintage American Standard convectors were rotted out and the controls were shot. -DF

    Great Work

I just saw the Unico chiller last week on the current This Old House project. Where is the condensate piping run for each unit? Does each Duo have it's own on-board thermostat? Your piping and insulation work is top shelf! Is the Unico a HP unit? What's the smallest tonnage? I'm wondering if residential chillers are the wave of the future.

    Beautiful Work - As Always

Dan, save the spark plug out of the hydrojunk, you can use it in your lawnmower.He,He. One of few jobs I have seen where the insulation did not look bad. Nice work. Kudos to Dan and his fine installing crew. You always have great work going on. If I ever decide to call it quits in New York, I am coming down to work with you. By the way, I like the dead mens sticker on the boiler. I have it tatooed on my right shoulder, you do not get any more enthusiastic about your trade than that.

    Great Work, Darin

    Insulation

    Johnny,

The insulation is standard fiberglass pipe insualtion with formed fittings. One of my installers has a background in commercial work and he does an outstanding job cutting, forming and fitting the insulation. He wraps all the joints and then coats everything with a type of mastic (not sure which) that locks everything in place. -DF

    Joe

    Joe,

This is a 5-ton Uni-Chiller. They come in 3-ton and 5-ton, 1ph. or 3 ph. The convectors are grouped in 6 zones controlled by zone thermostats. The thermostats only operate the fans in the convectors. The system runs on constant circulation riding a reset curve. Each convector has a condensate drain.

We have multiple projects right now using chilled water. I feel it is the wave of the future. You can locate the chillers remotely, stage multiple chillers, and use the chillers for radiant cooling, if controlled properly. They also have superior humidification control as you can dial in the water temperature and hence the coil temperature. Check out the sensible ratios and coil temps on some of the new 13 SEER equipment and tell me how well they will dehumidify in a humid climate. -DF

Thanks for the nice comments. I am blessed to have a fine and telented crew of installers.

The Uni-Chiller utilizes a brazed plate refrigerant/glycol heat exchanger. It is expensive but anything worth having is.

I have used some of the Carrier 2 sp. equipment but I have not done any ddc work. -DF

    Big V

Hi Paul. I'm a big fan of the Vitodens. In this case, the venting flexibility of the Prestige was a factor in choosing it over The V. -DF

    She's a beauty eh?

Cool to see the chilled water system. No pun intended. It makes so much sense on a lot of jobs. It's just a little pricey for some customers. I like the commercial insulation. I have done it on a commercial level but never for residential. The stuff aint cheap. I know what you mean about the flexibilty of the Prestige venting. I have fit one in where another brand wouldnt allow. I'ts hard to get away from windows on some jobs for proper clearances. WW
