Piping diagram software

I agree in principle that HydroniCad seems to fit what you are looking for in terms of objects and simplicity. I just purchased a copy and am getting used to using it. Not as full featured as AutoCAD but specifically is not meant to be. (Part of my adaptation is that I have used AutoCAD for years and years so my expectations and the command structure is different.) I have not taken this far enough to comment on it intelligently.

What I have used for diagramming at a different level is "HVAC Solution" out of SLC, Utah but distributed by Elite Software out of Texas. This software is quite robust and will calculate coil, boiler and heat exchanger loads (both heating, cooling and air-side) based on what you connect to them. They release updates regularly so it stays current. A little pricey for academic use but there are other options within this software:

Taco has a partnership agreement with HVAC Solution and markets a limited version for hydronics only. I would contact them and find out. Perhaps there is an academic license version you can buy in bulk?

Another (older) system I have used is Visio (used by controls/logic folks) and AutoCAD's "Actrix" which is I believe discontinued. "Intelligent Objects" is the root tehnology with these. They may have re-surfaced under other vendors. I know Visio has been bought by Microsoft. Not that this would improve it or anything :)

Hope this helps,

Brad

    Piping drawing software

I am a vocational high school plumbing and heating instructor in Massachusetts.
Was wondering if anyone had a lead on some non-CAD software for drawing simple p&h layout drawings. Something that had a library of pipe materials, valves, fittings & fixtures would be great. Most of the software I've turned up on the net is just too high powered for my needs. I am hoping to Keep It Simple while generating some project drawing for the students.
    Thanks for input

Have you looked @ Hydronicad? You can download a trial @ www.hydronicpros.com - this will give you a good idea of the program & its uses.

    Don't see

much of anything in Hydronicad for Plumbing! But it is a great tool for Hydronic Heating diagrams. Haven't used AutoCad, but have Visio 2003 Professional. It will do plumbing, heating, HVAC, electrical, audio-visiual logic, floor plan, house plan, plant layout, Mech Eng, Elec Eng, brainstorming, organizational charting, plot planning, kitchen design, and on and on.

For the non-PE Techno-Phobic, it is OUTSTANDING! It's more than I'll ever use, but, I have a vast file of HVAC/Plan drawings that are invaluable.

    HydroniCAD

will continue to evolve. Should see electricial components soon. Be able to build the mechanical and the electrical schematics.

Possibly by the end of this month some prebuild hydronic templates you can download and build on to, instead of starting from scratch.

Plumbing wise it has all types of pipe and valves, buy not the actual fixtures. You could build your own, within the program, I suppose.

There will be some new features for the HDS by June also. Updated pump selections, a really neat modulating condensing boiler module ;)

    drawing software

it appears my options may be a bit limited. in the overall curriculum, the plumbing and heating strands are equally important. schematics, as uncomplicated as i intend, may be best left to pencils and templates; difficult to make them neat though. i did check the ms-office site for the Visio 2003 software and found that i can get a free trial version by download or mail. i'll give that a try
    -thanks guys for the time-
