Steam heated house in the city seems to use too much fuel!!

I am glad that the pros here could help you. Your oil consumption does sound excessive. Getting a steam genius in could save a lot of fuel as even simple venting issues can drive up consumption a great deal. I see a number of Wall luminaries listed in a 15-mile vicinity of the Bronx.

However, I would also consider reviewing the many options at NYSERDA to see if you can get a building expert in to evaluate performance improvement potential, loans for home energy improvement, etc. Some heating contractors already offer the same kinds of services (blower door, home evaluation, etc.).

My fellow homeowner guess is that your home suffers from steam issues, a lot of air infiltration, and the lack of insulation doesn't help either.

Just bought a two family double brick construction in the Bronx back in August and I think it's using to much oil. Granted I have no insulation in the walls , but I just had cellulose blown in last week into the crawlspace. SO as I stand right now since OCT 15th I have gone through about 1100 gallons of fuel oil to keep the house at 68 deg. at least during the day (6am to 10pm) and 57 degrees at night (10pm to 6am)using a Visionpro 8000 thermostat.I have had the boiler cleaned but not flushed yet. It is a WM GOLD Series SGO-7 about 7 years old. I have changed the vents in my apt. to faster venting ones (maid o mist 6 , c ,d depending on rad locations). Have yet to change tenants vents. Mains are asbestos insulated but I have no MAIN vents.Planning on tightening up on the outside of the house. I have found this board vey helpful and any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Eric...

How many square feet is the place? Or how many apartments/bedrooms, etc? I own a few and can do a loose comparison.

  • Eric , how many radiators

do you have in that home ? Adding the main vents is a must if you want to cut down on the fuel bills . But you should also figure out if the boiler is over or undersized . You'll need to measure each and every radiator - length and width of the sections and then count up the sections . But in the meantime , give us a general idea of what you got with the amount of radiators .

    I have a house...

That is 12 rooms, about 2500 square feet; hollow block construction with no insulation.

I've burned 1100 - 1400 gallons of oil per year over 15 years in Nassau County using oil at 69 degrees with no setback.

12 cast iron radiators, properly sized 30 year old boiler, proper venting with system working exactly as it should.

Make certain you have main vents and good radiator vents and properly sized boiler.

  • Just checked the specs

The Weil SGO7 is rated at 750 sq. ft. They gotta be some BIG RADS to rate a 7 section .

    Just checked the specs

I've got 290 sq ft EDR in my apartment alone, not including the small rad I put in the bathroom. The downstairs apt. is probably slightly less in the 240-250 sq ft EDR range. Then there are two wall hung rads on the ground level ,one is about 3ft x 3ft x 3inches the othe is about 2ft x 4ft x 4inches.

    I need a steam guy

to come over to my place and set up a plan of action to tune up my steam system. My system in my opinion is using way too much fuel. Put in 260 gallons on th 20th and today I dipped the tank and I have used approximately 125 gallons on mostly 40+ degree days or 11.4 gallons a day on average. This is excessive right or am I crazy? I am in the Bronx pretty much on the other side of the GW Bridge. Can anyone recommend a good steam guy that services my area? Thanks

Give me a call in the A.M. and we can discuss this if you would like.
