Mini duct Air Handlers

And get ready for some sticker shock with ANY of the high velocity type systems. They are great for certain applications where standard duct can't be run, but the material cost is pretty salty!

Mini ducts air handlers, furnaces and compressors

    Hello all,

I have begun to research replacing our steam gas heating system but would like to add central A/C at the same time.

I have myself partially convinced that the most cost effective way to go about this is to switch to forced air where the duct work can be used for both heating and cooling. This avoids having 2 separate "circuits"....eg pipes/radiatiors for hot water heat and ducts for cooling.

So, I like the mini duct air handlers from either Spacepak or Unico. Spacepak claims their blower units can be used for heat as well by adding a hot water coil. Assuming this, what furnaces would work well? Which AC Compressors?

Go Unico for a/c only. Good quality.

Like Will said , the equipment is pricey, but when its 100o and humid and your house is 72o and dry, you'll have forgotten all about the price.

    Unico

I would also agree with the others. Steam heat and Unico for cooling only is the best of both worlds.

Unico allows the use of a round, steel duct system that is then insulated on the exterior which keeps the air stream from being exposed to fiberglass. It will also have less energy losses in an attic installation than a conventional duct system due to it's reduced duct sizes and the ease of sealing and properly insulating.

You'll have to search out a contractor who is willing to use steel duct as most I believe go with the fibrglass ductwork. Also make sure a proper heat gain is done and that the duct system is properly engineered using the room-room data.
