banging radiator

I have this problem with a banging radiator--had a plumber out about 3 times now, with no progress. Its a single riser in the rear of the house. Here's my specific question:
I can't really tell where in the riser (what floor/radiator ) the banging is coming from but if the banging only occurs when a single radiator is open, does that mean that radiator is the problem? Or could the problem still be in the basement even though the banging only occurs when this single radiator is open?
