Rubik's Cube World Record

I didn't want to be the first to admit it, but I used to be able to do it in about the same time as Mark. My ten year old son got one for christmas a couple years ago, and I was amazed to find that I could still solve it after not seeing one for 20+ years. The kids get a kick out of messing it up, because they know it drives me nuts and I just have to fix it.

And I've pretty much always been a geek...

    Rubik's Cube Geek

Apparently not wanting to be outdone by that freak that recited pi to 4400 digits, Cal Tech student, Leyan Lo, broke to world record for the Rubik's Cube. He soled the puzzle in 11.13 seconds. Lo is a member of the Cal Tech Rubik's Cube club. Of course he is. He shattered the record of 11.75 seconds set by Frenchman Jean Pons at the Dutch Open last year.

Hold on a second. They have a competition for the Rubik's Cube? What is this, 1983? Are they wearing parachute pants and break dancing while they are doing the cube? And despite setting the new world record, Lo didn’t win the competition. Because as we all know, dork cube spinning is a best of five format, not a one and done. His three best times didn’t beat that of fellow spinner Shotaro "Macky" Makisumi, a 15-year old from Pasadena.

Look, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that I am impressed with a geek solving that cube in 11 seconds, but if I gave you 11 years, could you even do it?

And I have a few questions regarding the rules of these “competitions”. Can they grease their cube? Can they load it up on Vaseline or is that a violation of cube spinning?

Here’s one thing you can’t take away from Lo. The guy is a 2-time world record holder. Not only does he have the record in cube spinning, but he also holds the title for, the “longest stretch without ever having spoken to a woman’. These two titles typically go hand in hand.

Wait,.... there's MORE Rubiks records !!

Don't laugh....Rubik's cube has made a BIG comeback at tech oriented colleges. My son at RIT formed a club, and these kids are passionate about solutions, which are very mathematical in nature. ($30k /yr...at least he can solve the cube!!) I wish I could find you guys a link, but it escapes me at the moment. BUT...there's World records for solving BLINDFOLDED.....and....with ones FEET.....I kid you not!!!if I find the link, I'll post it.

There is a trick or formula or format for solving the cube that I have long since forgotten (an old girlfriend taught me) But basically once you memorize certain moves it is a snap. Back in the early 80's I used to be able to do the cube in under 1.5 minutes. Not fast by the records that you just mentioned but still fast enough to freak people out at keg parties. (And I am not nor ever was a geek)

    Serious Stuff !!

Yep...this IS serious stuff indeed. Once you've mastered solving the standard 3 x 3 cube, you can step it up a bit and work on the 5 x 5 cube.

Here's how serious these guys are: http://www.speedcubing.com/main.html

The blindfolded and feet record holders are there.

    Forget it.

    EDIT.

I had posted a site that showed a guy solving the cube single-handedly.

Never mind. The site advertised things in its margin that I cannot endorse.

    Hey Brian!

got a daughter who's a Junior at RIT. She not into Rubick cubes though. She's on the photography side of things. It is a bit pricey. I'll have to ask her if she's heard of the cubers. :) WW
