hydro-air question, proper position of valve

Look's like you have an old by-pass valve. Without knowing the model number of the valve, it looks ok. The valve can be piped, differant ways, depending on the application. In your case it looks like, you should have a constant flow of hot water through the valve back to the boiler. This should give you a hot coil instantly. If the t'stat opens the zone valve. Open all the valves, move the valve lever from the manual to the auto position, and raise the t.stat setting and see what happens. My quess is the valve was left in the manual position, not allowing full flow through the coil.

shut off valve questions with pictures...

I have a somewhat hacked/botched heating system in my upstairs that doesn't seem to be working well. The input to the air handler, see attached pictures, has a honeywell powerhead/valve that splits the flow two ways. I am not sure why it is that way. The valve was installed in the manual open position. The turnoff valve on the "B" side of the Honeywell split was also left in the open position. When I close that valve I get much hotter air out of my air handler. Is there any danger in leaving that shutoff valve in the closed or partially open position and forcing all or the majority of the water through the air handler coil?

The attached pictures show the valve in question.

As explained in the previous post, it look OK, but there are options that are hard to know from such a limited view.
I can't help but comment on the craftsmanship[ ( or the lack of ) in those soldered joints. If someone didn't care enough to do better work, is the valve installed correctly?
Might be a good idea to have a real pro check it out. My helpers solder better than that, in the shop, their first day on the job, before they are let loose on a job !!!
