New energy tax credits

I am about to install an hvac system for a customer that is dual fuel. It will use a heat pump that is 14 SEER, 10.8 HPSF. This is worth a $ 300 tax credit. They will be backing it up with a 90 plus nat gas condensing furnace. That's worth $150. To top it off the furnace has a variable speed blower. That's worth $50. Total of $500. $500 is the maximum allowed by the federal tax credit rules for homeowners. An interesting aside. I was recommending the dual fuel to this particular homeowner because in our area a heat pump costs a lot less to use than nat gas even before the hike in prices that are coming due to Katrina. The nat gas back up is more comfortable that a heat pump at 35 and below. He remarked that this was like the Hybrid cars, using electric and gas whenever it is best for mileage. I was surprised. I wish I'd thought of that comparison. I might start marketing my "Hybrid" heating systems. :) WW

  • Only slightly better than a sharp stick to the eye...

Wayne, I guess it IS better than a sharp stick to the eye, but only slightly...

Heres a link to a site that spells it out as best it can be (at present) until the IRS makes up new laws, rules and regulations to deal with it.

I guess I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the last BIG solar tax credit skam...

    http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=products.pr_tax_credits

In general, if you read the whole bill (Ho Hummm ZZZZzzzzz) there is an OBVIOUS inordinate amount of Pork in this piece of legislation. It was an attempt on this administrations part to circumvent a riot amongst the environmentalist community. Poor effort at best IMHO.

    Better than nothing I suppose...

    actually

the $2000 residential credit pretty much will cover nost labor and parts for the installation. Better than a sharp stick by 2 grand's worth:)

I suspect the commercial, with it's 30%,unlimited dollar amount will see the largest percentage of growth. Several of the solar panel manufactures I have talked to have all their production committed to large commercial projects.

I haven't figured out how they will administer the program. Will someone inspect the installations? How will the paper work flow?

I need to get ahold of Dave Springer or some of the boys that deal with government paper work and solar projects to get the low down.

    A bunch

ofmagazines are running articles on the credits. Forbes, Solar Today, JLC and a few others I have read. Too bad more and more mags are limiting the downloadable articles without bucking up.

None of the articles so far are getting into the nuts and bolts of how you actually do the paperwork shuffle.

The solar PV and hydronic look to be the biggest $$ winners. As`I understand it, both PV and solar hydronic systems could qualify for the max 2000.00, or a total of 4 grand worth of credits.

I just hope this credit actually gets off the ground and not lost in some political quagmire :)

    Wondering the same thing HR

I haven't been able to find any details on how they determine the % savings for these installs and who makes that call. Nor have I found any info on where proof of installation and performance are sent to. I'd like to see a lot more info on any of these programs before I'd advise a customer one way or another.

    Dual Fuel

has been used around here a long time to offset the price of oil which until recently has been higher in price than nat gas around here. Heat Pumps are gaining higher and higher efficiency ratings and actually are a lot more cost effective than any fossel fuel, with the electric prices here being relatively stable and low. However there is a loss in comfort with heat pumps that people worry about, although the new variable speed blowers have helped that problem a lot. I set up the heat pump to run at outside temps of 35 and above. The fossel fuel takes over below 35 degrees to ensure comfort. I think calling it a hydrid system instead of dual fuel could shake up peoples understanding of what's going on and why they should do it. WW

On demand water heaters get $300

Given that the vast majority of the US uses .60EF water heaters, this is a good rate for the new on-demand water heaters.

    On demand extra

With the rebate, and price increase for direct vents that must comply with FVIR technology next year the price difference should be very close. I think the on demands will be found in alot more new construction because there, if first cost price if not everything, pretty much the driver.
