A Living Deadmen's Christmas

For those who have followed the progression of THIS DAMNED HOUSE, this was the first full blown Christmas that felt like Home. Lil Monika got her first kitchen set, a Bute mde right in Pennsylvania. Matt Jr his first Bike. Bridgid Colleen stuffed animals. Mom got me a great book on the History of Barns in America, you wouldn't believe the original illustrations in this book. Barb got a gold Saint Bridgid's Cross and a Statue of Saint Patrick. WE got another Christmas with Mom. Opa got a genuine pair of Vietnam Jungle Boots. Dinner was Ham with all the fixin's. Papa (me) fixed up some fine vitttles for am chow call: Corned beef hash, sausage, bacon, blueberry and banana pancakes. Several Mimosas accompanied my culinary quest. In the afternoon, we all had Pomegranet Martinis - even Mom, who will be having a blood transfusion today....can't let the cancer make you stop living. It was a grand day. Hope you'll had a great time too. I'd love to hear about your day. Happy Channukah to all My Jewish Wethead Breathren. Mad Dog

Theres just NO place like home for the holidays...
and your home has a special warmth and glow to it. Love all the Dead Men wear on the young'uns.
Congrats to you and yours, and may you celebrate many more hereafter.
I spent my Christmas surrounded by beautiful women (as I ALWAYS do), being lavished upon with gifts from far and near. Of all the gifts I received, I cherish being surrounded by my loved ones the most. That NEVER gets old or thrown away...
Merry Christmas to you and Happy Holidays to all.

Books always fit, MAD DOG
They're the perfect gift. I would really enjoy the one about Barns. Barns are an endangered species as you know. There's about as many new barns being built as there are one-pipe steam systems! Your breakfast sounds awesome, and love that fire. Happy New Year! Kevin0 -

Yes, Kevin this one was by Eric Sloane
I'll let you know where I got it from. The illustrations are killer. Fine drawings on the beams. the methods, the tools. Yes, like The Steam and many of my other passions....THEY WILL NOT DIE ON MY WATCH, Mad Dog

Cheap pole structures now rule the farm. Sad. Here is our small horse barn, all brick, now doing business as our garage:

Ya, love old barns. Here is our old barn, after we opened it up a bit for a garage:0 -
Spiffy Suit
I like your new insulated welding suit. You will certainly show up now in the pictures taken while you work on big pipes in those dark basements.
We stayed home too. Every year it looks more finished and the radiant floor is so comfy.
I also got some books: a postcard history of Baltimore, one on places to visit in Maryland and Delaware and a CD pack of old radio shows. A friend gave me a DVD of Roy Orbison's Black and White Night.
Since I am hobbling from foot surgery it was nice to just hang around and eat roast beast with yorkshire pudding. My first steam book from HH.com is still in transit so Santa will be arriving again.
I suspect we will be enjoying more pictures of your work in the new year.
Stay Warm

Cheers for Mimosa
The perfect drink for enjoying steaming hot radiators in the morning. Thanks for sharing your Christmas.
This year, I was in charge of the menu. So guess what?
We had boiled-in-steam turkey. I have done it many times to my chickens but the turkey was a first. The family all doubted my method until I converted them. Surprised? It really works. It took all of about one big hour to cook the 12 pound bug in the pressure cooker. Works wonders on ham too. The remaining turkey parts get converted into Paella.
For dessert, the kids loved the chocolate covered ice-cream bombe. I made two of those, one more for tonight...
Best wishes for health and happiness.0 -

I like those Two shiney new plumbers
that were helping on the driveway *~/:)0 -
1910. It was the barn for the carriage house horses. There was a larger mule barn behind it. The bricks were made on site, as it was one of the area brickyards.
Matt, you called grandpa "Opa"? Thats a German usage around here. This must not be the Sweeney side of the family:)0 -
Hey, Mad Dog...
There is only one MOM. Do what it takes.
I read one time that Eric Sloane was actually a weatherman by trade. Go figure.
Your post made my feel good. And hungry. And thirsty...0 -
Yes I am God has shone down upon me

Cheap labor and never complain
It is a pleasure that they are so interested in doing things. I let my 6 yr old boy fry the ham and break trhe eggs for breakfast - he loves it. Thanks Weez. MD

Like Douglas Mac Arthur said of the hurts in his life...........
To paraphrase: Of all the hurts and pains, the death of my parents and my brother are wounds that never heal. I feel the same way. You do learn to move past it, but the emoitions can bubble up at any time. Mad Dog

I like Sharp People
You got it. My Side is about 75% Irish 20% Bavarian and 5% er...er french (swallow hard). My wife's side is 50% Bavarian 50% German. Until Germany's Unification in 1871, The many diffrent tribes and groups though of referred to and thought of themselves by region. Some of that survives to this day, many Bavarians feeling that way. my mother in law was Born in Bavaria. My wife teases me that the kids are more German than Irish. Its a good combo. Both sides like to eat, drink, and laugh. Mad Dog

Fairly common combination...
Lots of Irish/German out there (or Bavarian in your case). My paternal grandfather's people came from Reinhausen bei Gottingen, in Hanover. My maternal grandpa was of good Swiss and Scot stock. Both married Irish women. End of story - I know all grandmothers are a force to be reckoned with but Irish grandmothers are (or at least used to be) in a league of their own:)
Unfortunately, I didn't get an Irish surname. Always kind of missed that.0 -
Old stuff
Man after my own heart. New is just not the same as old. I live in a house from 1793. Post and beam - hand hewed, mortised & pegged, not a nail in the framing. Unfortunately, the barn (85' X 45') burned before we bought the place. Old engineering books, machinery, outboard motors, pumps, engines, I love (and collect) them all. Enjoy your family - fine looking children. (They grow up MUCH too fast) Do try a turkey in the deep fryer! And Terry- I'll be in Oneonta this week, save me a hug. Wheezbo - Don't even smile. I'm coming to Alaska in June. To everyone on the Wall: Keep the pride in your work, and keep those pictures coming.0 -
Omelettes are made the same way
every time (Extra-sharp cheddar cheese, salt, pepper & garlic powder & a little milk) as are the leg quarters marinaded the same way, and the skin is charred the same way, and "Beanie-Wienies" better be on the plate. Or "life wouldn't be the same".
That's how it is when Autumn comes here every other weekend. She does breakfast & I help
The ritual hasn't changed in 8 Yr's, and it won't.
Thanks, Matt.
Brian & Autumn.
