Top 5 Tips Loop Baseboard Heat

Hello. A female neighbor just bought older house that has hot water baseboard heat (newer than house). 1999 Crown boiler, copper piping, fin tube baseboards...

Can a few experts give advice on top things to look for and adjust in order to make system run optimally or avoid problems? Believe it is a loop design.

I read Dan's Q&A section on topic--just looking for any additional tips from the hot water baseboard experts on Wall so I can help her out (Note: Her Dec. gas bill was $480 which seems high for Washington DC--my gas bill for steam heat was $130--similar house size).

    Much thanks for any advice.

    High Fuel Bill?

    Hello,

Try cleaning the heat exchanger, 1/8 inch of soot can be costing her as much as 30% more in extra fuel. With just that little soot build up.

    check the BB

is it actually getting hot? Could it be air bound? Are all the fins clean and unblocked? Doesn't matter how good a heating system is if the old house has lousy insulation and large amount of heat loss.

    Find a Professional

Look to the left at Find a Professional and call All Steamed Up, Inc.. Steamhead has done a few jobs to save the customer money, it is also a good time to establish a relationship with a service company in case of future breakdowns.

    Baseboard

Make sure that all of the baseboard rads aren't covered by furniture and long hanging drapery. Also be sure that all windows and doors are properly sealed.

    we put you in heat

Make sure basebord is at least 1 inch off the carpet. put purge valves on return side of boiler. put a good air scoop in feed side. put circulators on feed side. make a loop donot tee off any where. check lenght of run of base against manuf. sugestions.
