Gorton vs Hoffman

The Gorton C vents about twice as much as a Hoffman 1A on the no. 6 setting. That said, sometimes you need to slow the venting to reduce noise and excess heat. Short of putting in TRV's the Hoffman 1A works well. I use them on smaller radiators. Basically all we use are 1A's and Gorton C's.

I have noticed that everyone talks about gorton steam valves for rad venting. Gorton offers 5 or 6 different valves that vent at different rates, while the Hoffman 1A is one valve with 6 settings. With 13 different sized rads in my home it seems much easier to make fine adjustments to each valve as apposed to changing valves from one rad to another to get the right mix. Is there a reason that Hoffman 1A is not the better choice when replacing these vent valves?
    Just wondering, Mark

    problem

The problem with the Hoffman 1A is that on its max setting, it barely vents as much air as a Gorton 6. I found on my radiators that the majority of them needed at least Gorton C's based on EDR to heat quickly and I used D's on some that were at the very far end of the main and didn't heat as fast. I find that 6s come in handy on some of my radiators I need to slow down a little that are on the first floor and heat faster.

To learn more about the specific vent capacities, you can buy the eBook online which covers how to balance a steam system and the venting capacities of various vent types.

Very simple for me after many years of experiementation

Gortons for all main vents and most rads. Hoffman "D" for large rads you want to slow down. Mad Dog

    Gorton vents

    Mark:

Gorton makes a terrific product that really vents the air out. Take a good look at your house, size of each radiator, distance from boiler and you can get a good idea. Put the Gorton 4 on the radiator that is in the room with the thermostat and Gorton D's on the rooms furthest away. Use the C and D upstairs, 5 and 6 downstairs as a guide.

Just as important is properly venting the mains. Speak to Ken Kunz at Gorton. His phone number is (908) 276-1323. Ken is very helpful.
