Noise/New boiler
Hi, I'm a new student of steam heat. In Oct. had a Burnham V84 installed by the Contractor. I'm almost finished reading We got steam Heat. There's been a lot of sputtering, noise when the heat starts up and a couple of radiators spit when the heat comes up. He came back before xmas and put new vents on these radiators--still happening. I put all new pipe insulation--not sure how close to boiler to end insulation. My plan is to bring the subject up again in the fall when he maintains the system. Maybe the system needs to be drained/cleaned. I'm gaining knowledge through reading but at the same time getting frustated because I don't see main vents at the end of my main pipes in the basement. Also, my bathroom radiator doesn't heat up now. I'd appreciate any guidance. I just don't want to start with a new contractor again;. Oh, I would mention he did pitch one radiator toward supply valve. I know this is something I need to check as well with all the radiators. I want to be assertive/specific with him when he comes back so he takes these problems seriously. I APPRECIATE all feedback.0 -
Ditto
I know this doesn't help you, but I feel your pain. I know that the boiler needed to be replaced, but WOW, if it didn't start a chain reaction... Best of luck, and can't wait to hear responses on your post from the experts (Thanks for helping us out, guys!)0 -
Steam Boiler Replacement after effects
Many things from sludge , dirty water causing surging problems.
Sometimes smaller boilers contain less water base and condensate comes back too fast cause problems.
Sounds like u are on it... sometimes in appropiate header design and elevation to water can cause problems..
Best luck. Sounds like u are on it.0 -
Huh?
"Sometimes smaller boilers contain less water base"??
Are there times when smaller boilers have a LARGER water base??
Were you by any chance on the Jamaican Bob-sled team?

Noise after Installing new system
Thanks for the feedback/support; I'm having pictures made on CD rom, and I'll attach as soon as I have them available. I certainly am learning a lot from the book by Dan and the website pros. I did look in the manuf. spec (a little hard to follow; it looks as though they have 2-pipe picture; I have one-pipe.
Thanks again,0 -

If you are going to post pictures of the new boiler have pictures of the end of the mains and returns as well. If it is a dry return the main vent will be at the end of the return around the boiler. Bathroom radiator- Is it on the first floor? Did someone shut off the supply valve? Water spitting / noise -Does the new system has a higer net rating than the old one? Did he used the same supply risers and headers or he installed smaller new ones?
