furnace smell problems?

Mitch_6 Member Posts: 549
improper combustion and chances are the combustion chamber is soot-ed up to.

The contractor will most likely have to clean the soot, fire and adjust the burners (a digital analizer will help a lot)

Since there is no way a new gas appliance should be sooting up has anyone checked to see that the furnace is set up for the proper fuel is your furnace natural gas or propane and has it been set up for the fuel. Usually on the front jacket or just inside the cover it will state what fuel the unit is set for but the gas valve and orifices should also be checked.

    Wendy

Glad to hear it all worked out and problems solved, hard to believe that work like that gets done and passes everyone by without notice.

    furnace smell problems?

back again-after all the previous problems solved i am still getting something from my furnace.i had the health inspector back and they said they were only picking up 1-ppm of monoxide so it was well with safe limits but picking up high levels of carbon dioxide(2900)?would my furnace cause this cause thats when it seems worse?please help.

The main gas of combustion is carbon dioxide. Maximum standards of carbon dioxide in spaces is 800-1000ppm. I can't think of any other place you could get those kind of levels in your house unless you had a few hundred people for a sleep over. Something in your house is not venting properly. Maybe someones head wasn't sticking out as far as you thought.

    Did you get

the contractor back that made the last repairs.

Did they test the flue piping to make sure it was all sound and did they check to make sure you are not getting products of combustion pulled back in.

    furnace smell problems?

ive hired a new cont. to come in-he has resealed the pipes, and insulated in and around where they exit the roof.he is coming back on monday to do a smoke type test to make sure the heat exchanger doesnt have cracks in it. other than that could it be anything else?would the water or condensation cause a exhausty type taste in your mouth, when the furnace runs?or do you think its still some kind of exhaust leak or back up?any ideas please post.thanks again for everyones help.

Smoke tests are hit or miss

checking with solutions, test gas and or a combustion analizer may be a better way some companies also have visual inspection equipment.

Has a manufacturer rep seen the installation?

Are you taking action against the original installer?

If you problem still cannot be solved you could get an outside consultant to visit but it may be costly.

    What state are you in?

    Your owners manual

should have contact info for the factory from there you can go to the local rep.

Jim Davis who responded to you before is part of the National Comfort Institute. He travels the country teaching this stuff and may know some one in your area I do not know what the cost for him or some of the other experts that teach to travel for a residencial trouble call.

His E mail if you do not still have it is jimd@nationalcomfortinstitute.com

    i remember you ,Wendy...

seems our general concensus was that you needed to have some one(tech) check the Heat Exchanger, flue pipe, stack, make up air, do a combustion test, check any openings that might be causing zero pressure plane changes and get your children out for a stay at granny's ....

peppermint oil is one of the cool tools that may have been employed in this whole process. ask.if it hasnt, any of us can give you the rudiments of its use...
