What do you call yourself's

that I am a Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Service and Installation Technician. I work on ALL forms of heating, scorched air, hydronic, gas, oil, electric, heat pumps, water heaters, humidifiers, air cleaners, air purifiers, air conditioning, ductwork, piping, repairs, maintenance, and installations (try to put THAT on a business card ;) ). I work on hydronics all the time, but I am not a plumber. Plumbers are definatly not the only people who can work on hydronics, and there are some plumbers out there that have no business working on hydronics. Of course there HVAC contractors that have no business doing HVAC work either.

    besides professionals

As a small buisness owner, I sometimes have the oportunity to barter with customers. Well today I had an electrican come in and ask that question. I told him I was looking for a HVAC guy to replace a boiler

He said, "HVAC" they only do forced hot air systems and AC,
"you need a Plumber" [ok I hearya twingin in your seats]

    So what cat do you put yourself in and who is full of hot air:}

    Somedays

Just plain stupid for letting myself get into this business. Some HVAC people do boilers some do not touch them, most plumbers install boilers, and most oil burner service people install boilers. Most gas service technicians that I know of do not but some do. I am an oil burner tech that does HVAC as I work in the oil and propane industry, I do nat gas installs but little service on nat. Hard to say what hat on what day.

Lots of cross over these days

Hard to judge a book by it's cover.

Plenty of good HVAC contractors do wet heat. Same for plumbers doing HVAC air side stuff.

In many areas a licensed plumber is required to connect boilers to a potable water source. Although I've yet to see an inspector around here question that :)

I carry a master plumbing, mechanical, and gas fitters license. Although I consider mastery a journey not an end all.

I'm not sure anyone is ever a true master, we never stop learning.

    Maybe Gandalf :)

you know how some bus drivers & commercial pilots say that they're 'in transportation'?

well then i suppose you could say that you're 'in heat' ...

    I'm a hydronician

That's what it says on my business cards and when they ask (and they do !!! ) I tell them I'm a hydronics technician. I deal with all aspects of water (pressure, temperature, flow, etc.) Makes people stop and think.

Pipe Fitter, Plumber, Steamfitter and Radiant Designer

    What do I Call Myself?

Mostly I call myself a plumber.

I worked for a company for a couple of years that did industrial plumbing and high pressure steam. I was apprentice to this old guy, Joe Thompson. He was in his 70's at the time. He called himself either a steam fitter or pipe fitter. When I started for the company I used to call Joe a plumber. Oh he would get mad. He hated for people to call him a plumber. Joe used to be in the union but now that he was older he worked for this nonunion contractor at the Pitney Bowes Factory. He wouldn't let other people call me a plumber either. So for a year or two I was called a Steamfitter or PipeFitter's Apprentice. I left that company and on my next job I was called a plumber again.

When I visit clients for big jobs I call myself a hydronic designer or radiant designer. If I am working with a old hot water or steam system I call myself a hydronic designer. If I am working with a radiant system, I call myself a radiant designer.

If I am doing service work or small jobs then I go back to calling myself A plumber.

I am proud to be a plumber. I will always see myself as a plumber first.

    Depends on the day-

Some days I'm the Heating Guy. Some days I'm the AC Guy. I've been the Guy Here To Fix The Leak. The Guy Here To Stop The Banging/Screeching/Thumping/Smoking. To other tradesmen, the HVAC Guy. On demo days, the HAVOC guy. When dealing with snobby high brows, I'm a Thermodynamic Systems Analyzer. When I'm at the best part of my day, I'm just Dad!

My first certificate said "Building Operator A", so that's what I called myself, building operator. I took the upgrader course and got the new certificate, which says "power engineer", but I still call myself building operator coz I do a lot more operating and troubleshooting than I do designing.

    At times

I'm a radiant personality. :) I have one customer that calls me, "The PHD of HVAC." I of course like that customer a lot. A lot of crossover in this area. I come from hvac but some folks think I'm a plumber since I work with moving water around to warm people up. I'm officially a Master HVACR in MD and DC, and a Master Mechanical contractor in VA. Good thing there's no more jurisdictions to cover in this area. Yeesh! WW

    plumbers doing hvac.....

hot rod that is a problem waiting to happen. Don't get me wrong, I love plumber's for what they do and am glad I know several so I don't have to mess with the "dirty side" of h2o.

What the problem will be in the future is these guy's solder joint's and I see alot of A/C done buy plumbing outfit's who solder A/C piping. It's a mess to repair a leak, you can not fix solder joint due to the ref. oil, you have to cut the fitting out and braze a new one in.

In the near future when r-22 is gone and 410A is the norm, soldering is not an option. The higher psi's of 410A will blow them apart.

If plumber's will work on their brazing skill's now we will be better off in the future, oh buy the way please purge with nitrogen, that's professional.
