Check with your state, they might have a list of approved contractors sometimes they offer grants on these things. Anyhow, I looked into it for my house in Connecticut and with the Federal and State grants it would still cost me 10K to get anything usefull. That was for photovoltaics thoug which can heat the hot water up with free electricity. No need to convert it to AC. There are lots of other ways to do it.

the problem with trying to use solar for heating is when your heat demand is highest (the winter) your solar gain is lowest, generally it doesn't work.

however, when solar is implemented in DHW generation the payback is quite significant as you use domestic hot water all year round. i'm presently working on a project utilizing the new Viessmann Vitosol 100 panels

    solar

Or try www.solarThermal.com. As previously stated, most need is when least sun available. Vacuum tubes appear to be the best, but unless you build a huge system, or your load is small, you will need a back-up: mod-con boiler, buffer tank(s) etc.

did you look into the photovolatiacs for electricty or hot water. i have a friend in RI who just installed it for electricity. it cost him about 10k with the rebates. if it works like they say, it should pay for itself in 7-8 years. didn't know if you had talked to anyone about it.

    Better run some numbers first

determine your heat load and see how many panels and gallons of storage you would need to "put a dent" in that load. it gets to be a big number quickly when you consider the insulated storage and amount of panel square footage.

SDHW is a no brainer, as that is an everyday, year 'round load. You ought to be able to buy a complete panel, tank, control package for SDWH for around 3 grand. That should have a 5 year payback. Maybe less.

And it should qualify for the ferdral tax credit program.
