I'd love burning coal too, if I needed another hobby, or wanted to kill all the plants in the yard with the coal ash.

We'd love to see a pic of that old coal boiler.

Lots of dry returns had the main vent all the way back right before it drops down and becomes wet. I'd rather put it about 15" after the last steam runout. Otherwise, the vent has to handle the return's air too.

Often they wanted to keep the vents near the boiler.

Main vent located at end of return - one pipe system

I have read on this wall that main vents are to be installed at the end of the main vents, yet the dead men that designed my system many years ago put them at the end of the returns. Most of the old houses I go into have the main vents at the end of the returns. I have to beleive the dead men put them there for a reason and not at the end of the mains. I think they had in mind to flush out the returns with every startup. Next week I'm going to a home to check out an old snowman boiler that still uses coal. The homeowner has used nothing but coal and says it's cost effective and doesn't want anything else.
