gas water heater in garage

Does anyone out there know if there has been a revision in the code which states that a gas water heater installed in a garage must be a minimum of 18" off the floor? The reason I ask is because of the new "flame arrestor" design. I have a job where the existing direct vent water heater is leaking and I want to replace it with an atmospheric heater and power venter. Problem is I don't have the 18" to raise it. Any suggestions? thanks.

I can't imagine that code changing
You rarely see saftey issues softened in national codes. Your atmospheric would probably be ok until some idiot fills the lawnmower and throws the small gas can in the direction of the water heater. "Well, Dr, there wasn't that much gas in there" Guess whose fault it is! I think based upon your space limitations your best bet will be an on-demand.0 -
It is in Denver...
as long as the appliance is either FVIR or sealed combustion, it CAN sit on the floor.

Code for FVIR does not require
18" off the floor. Recheck with local code officials for your area.0 -

alternative to elevating
some codes allowed the water heater to be placed in an eighteen inch deep sheet metal box if there were height issues, amazing how technology can move ahead so much faster then the bureaucratic process.0 -
