Feed tank levels

While I diligently maintain the levels on my boiler, I never really pay much attention to the glass my feeder tank. Since my receiver is my primary air vent, I imagine I want to keep levels low enough that escaping air can leave the returns and get out without bubbling through condensate and keep levels high enough to make up for steam generation, so is that pretty much it? Anywhere between those two points? Can you make a case for staying high or low?
