Hot surface Igniter for Dunkirk Q90-175

    Igniter for Olsen (Dunkirk) Q90-175 boiler

    I have a Olsen Q90-175 boiler (Dunkirk in the US) which is 1 year an 1 month old and on Saturday - the hot surface igniter became defective and unfortunaly for me - in my city - Winnipeg commonly refered to as Winterpeg for it's really cold winters - no one stocks the igniter replacment kit so my question is - does anyone know of a third part or cross for this igniter? The defective igniter has a sticker that says Norton on it, Model 271-R

    I do have two on order (one for backup)and how long should one expect an igniter to last?

    LuckyI was smart enough to keep my old faithfull boiler in line as a backup so I do have heat.

    Starlite

    I have a cross-reference sheet from Starlite. (www.ignitersystems.com)and it lists the following Norton ignitors.
    201A,271A,201D,271D,201N,271N,271NQ,271Q,201W,271Y, 271 Y or M. I did not see a 271 with an "R" suffix.

    We just replaced a 271Y with a Robert-Shaw 41-406 and was just the ticket. You might download their cross-ref sheet or give them a call.

    can almost guaranty

    if you call Dunkirk, in Dunkirk N.Y. they will either send one out or give you a replacement no.
    alot of ignitors have been standardized. Don't know about the Norton though. If that hot surface ignitor is touched, the oil from your hands will create a hot spot nd they will burn out, other wise they are generally pretty reliable

    Had the same problem with the Q 90 that ignighter is a strange configuration and we had to order a new one and supply electric const heaters to keep the house from freezing as this was a replacment boiler for a lenox complet heat and were not yet in stock

    Don't know if this has any resonance here, but when Trane came out with the Voyager, oh, a few years ago (kinda giving away my age here), they used a spiral type hot surface ignitor that failed on a fairly regular basis. Like once a year. If even. They first told us that we as techs were touching it, and the oil from our fingers caused hot spots. (Did that mean that when they were installed at the factory that someone touched them there?...)Anyway, a few years later, they said if the unit was cycled on after a long set-back with a Really cold outdoor temp, the thermal shock, or possibly a drip of water from condensation was wiping them out-they then offered a kit which sent a "trickle" charge of voltage to the ignitor all the time to keep it "warm", until ignition voltage was neede. Finally, they figured out that the spiral type ignitor was a little, well, poorly designed, and changed the type used. Long story short, I don't rub ignitors through my fingers to test the Gods, but I don't buy the oil theory-could well be something else. Been there, bought the T-shirt. (heck, used to change the Voyager ignitors with Latex gloves-they sold em at my supplier! Little good it did, though...) Doubt this helps do anything but raise doubts, but what the heck-
