Left over Pex

Ken,

I did some searching for you and it seems that you do not have any local schools that I think would be able to use the tubing. I did, however, send out a couple of e-mails on your behalf to some other community colleges.

I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Any ideas-creative or otherwise- what to do with short lengths between 75'-150'? Sized from 1/2"-1" We don't want to just throw them away. We've been saving shorts for awhile and using as we have need but the pile has overtaken our storage area. Just seems a shame to toss it all.

I teach plumbing and heating at SUNY Delhi, a two year tech college in central N.Y. Where are you located? We could use some tubing 1/2 & 3/4 in our hands on lab. projects.

    Call your local vo-tech

Dan is right. There are a number of vo-tech schools that would love to receive your "shorties". If you e-mail me your contact information and location I can assist you in locating a school/program that would be able to use your "leftovers".

    Delhi Alum...

Went to Delhi in 1989-90, the course was taught by the infamous Mr."G" and Mr.Leide. Was a tremendous experience. If any Pro's are in the Delhi area please stop by and talk to the kids.

  • Re-Grind

I've often wondered if it is possible to re-grind this stuff and plug it back into the supply chain at the beginning. I realize that you'd not want to mix the different grades of PEX. Can it be done? Anyone from Wirsbo care to comment?

    John Barba told me Mark,

than you can't re-grind the stuff... Because it won't melt! (Oh Yeah, now I remember) Maybe they could grind it up to put in roads like they do tires. Or make one of Siggy's mile long manifolds and heat a shop with 25 foot loops. Kevin

depending on what make it is, you can use it for potable water piping. Watts Radiant Pex is one of those brands.

    Two things................................................

We save them for situations where a temp line is needed even on domestic they are fine for a while. We are doing this now on a reno job to provide temp. water. We also use them when a baseboard reroute comes up. Last (ok that 3) we cut the real shorties up and use them in sales presentations. After the big snowmelt job we did a few years ago and all tons of radiant jobs, we finally are getting to the bottom of the pile. Mad Dog

I keep the shorts to make bend supports. 12" pieces work just right.

It's a shame pex isn't recycled. I see dumpster loads of scrap behind Watts Radiant from time to time. samples from the new extruder.

I'm sure this won't compost in the landfill and create methane gas :)

Seem it could be ground up and used for that plastic/ wood composite decking material.

It does make a good fire starter, by the way. Mr Pex has claimed it does not give off any harmful emissions when burner, in a post here years ago. Ken asked him what that black smoke contained. Never heard the reply

    hot rod
