Cast Iron Boiler efficiency

Can the efficiency of a small atmospheric boiler drop over time due to sluge or whatever? In other words if the boiler just the right size, is the a chance that when it is say 15 years old that it may be too small? We have one that seems to not have a high enough temperature rise through the boiler. It depends on the water flow. Is the liklyhood enough to jusify measuring the water flow and finding out exactly what the boiler is doing?

    Sure

the boiler block can get dirty or sooted on the exterior and need a cleaning. Boiler cleaning brushes are available to clean out these passages.

And yes the inside of the boiler could have mineral build up if it has taken on water for whatever reason, assuming a closed loop hydronic system.

The boilers job is to use the energy from the fuel combustion process and transfer it to the water. Any dirt, soot, on the exterior, or mineral build up inside will impeed this thermal transfer.

An experienced boiler mechanic with the proper tools and instruments could check, clean and adjust that boiler to peak efficiency.
