Tekmar help

After reading through some more info on the tN4 and boiler mod I decided to change out the thermostats I have and stick with the tekmar. Ordered the stuff today. I like the idea of the indoor/outdoor reset and the interthermostat communication. I have on area in the house that we changed to a cathedral ceiling and added more glass to after the radiant system was designed and installed. This area will be on the Knight. I beleive the system will accomodate the need for a little more heat in this area nicely. As time goes by I would like to change the whole control system over. It would be far better than what is there now. It will be nice to have a whole house system. Thanks for your number Mike, I'll give you a call. You know, I called tekmar and no one would talk to me. Said they would call back. That was two days ago. I post on the wall and have all the info I need in hours...and with a smile. This place is great.

Tekmar Help
I just picked up a Tekmar 336 Zone Manager to control four zone pumps in a radiant system. I am using it in conjuction with a Lochinvar Knight 80. The Knight has a "Smart Board" and uses a Tekmar 070 outdoor sensor for reset so I don't need that aspect of the tekmar controls. The 336 however, does not have boiler control unless I am missing something. How do I control the boiler from the 336. Do I need to add a module? I am not familiar with the tekmat systems.
Thanks0 -
Tekmar tn4 42x
The 336 is designed to be used inconjunction with the Tekmar tn4 420, 421, or 422. Pick the one that is right for your setup.
420 - Tekmar Boiler Reset Module
One tekmarNet4, Boiler, DHW & Setpoint
421 - Tekmar Mixing Reset Module
One tekmarNet4, Mixing
422 - Tekmar Universal Reset Module
Two tekmarNet4, Mixing, Boiler, DHW & Setpoint

Tekmar tn4 Thermostats
If you are not going to use tn4 thermostats with the 336 you may want to consider getting a different zone controller like from Taco. The tn4 thermostats do integrate nicely with the 42x/336 and there are a lot of choices in tn4 thermostats.0 -
Sometime very soon
the Tekmar 423 will be available and that can control the modulation of the knight condensing boiler. My understanding is that it will be available at the beginning of the year.

You can either use the boiler module unit in Tn4 for this, or if you want to let the Knight control itself and just do a zone manager, take your 336 back and get a Tekmar 369 Zone manager. it's not Tn4 but it'll do the job of managing zones.0 -
that control system...
just recently got on the right track, heating and cooling and ventilation intergration...depending on the useage of these pumps primary secondary sub injection whatever would be the reason to select various controls.
for controling say 4 zones vrs complex sub system assemblies, my dollar is with Taco. for intergration tn4$ is cool as it has various chunks and add ons to pull larger systems "Together" how ever, there are some sharp systems that intergrate well and can be drawn up on actual or virtual station, control pannels.0 -
Thanks
The whole system includes a Geo heat pump,Unico cooling, and this portion, the Knight. The Knight will be used to backup and "Boost" the geo via a heat exchanger along with suppling four zones of new radiant. I had invisioned a slow transition over to tekmar controls for the whole system and was going to start here but didn't do my homework (shame on me). At this point I think I'll go with the Taco to simplify things and have a full control system designed by someone who knows what they're doing. It all works now but it is not a neat and clean install control wise. (I didn't do it)
So...any one need a 336?0 -
Tekmar 423
The 420 and 422 can control a modulating boiler with a 0 - 10v signal like the Knight is equipped for. What is different about either the Knight or the 423?0 -

You're right!, "I couldn't see the forest because of the trees."

I would need to change out 3 thermostats. One controls cooling as well as heat. Do you think it would be worth it to add a 420 Module and change out 3 thermostats or better off going with the Taco?

423? Please tell more.
And what about the module for gathering tn4 data, any word?0 -
Your choice.
The indoor feedback you get with tn4 as well as the other bells and whistles may or may not be worth it to you. The ability to ramp up the boiler as zones come on line or on return from setback is something that boiler outdoor reset alone can't do. The utility of setback has been debated here but with the indoor feedback combined with the boiler and availble radiation headroom, it certainly can work. Study the documentation on the 42x series and the thremostats to see what combo fits your application and the make the choice.
The tease of a future module to monitor and log the tn4 activity to a computer is compelling to certain geek types.0 -
Some very good answers....
tN4 is the way to go!!
As a couple of guys have mentioned, the 336 Zone Manager with tN4 thermostats need a Reset Module added. The Reset module can connect to the Knight Boiler and directly modulate it not only based on outdoor reset but also indoor air temperature feedback as well.
I could go on and on and try to tell you in writing what other benefits you will get by doing so, but think I can do better verbally and you'll be able to ask more questions as they come up when we go through it.
Please call me at your convenience at 250-545-7749, Ext. 214. It would be my pleassure.
Thanks,
