noisy Grundfos 15-58: repair?

Jim,
The noise you describe could be debris, air, velocity or any number of things.
I assume you have a UPS 15-58, did you try changing to a lower speed? Changing the speed can solve many flow/velocity related noises.
The Grundfos UP pumps use a very high quality ceramic bearing, it requires no service.
Incidentally, the entire pump is covered by a 3 year "bumper - to- bumper"warranty.
Feel free to contact technical service @ 800 333 1366 with any questions.

One of our 1-year-old Grundfos 15-58 circulators was making a clattering/jinging noise, which carried along the pipes throughout the house. I replaced it with an old B&G NRT-22 I had saved from the old system, and this cut down the noise, but I like to have a backup pump handy...
Is it possible to repack the bearings (assume that's the right solution) on a Grundfos 15-58? Or is it basically a throwaway pump?

Hello, ...Jim
the grunfoss pumps i seldom use anymore. when i am looking for 3 phase i look there buh i have seen recalls on them and can get some cheap the new ones are pretty good though ...whatever... the 15 series are fairly reliable however it is all a matter of the inital install ,thing is though with the wet rotor circs i bust out the allen key set and take those off spin the new one in ...long time ago id peel the capasitor out of the old and keep it....and the big silver "screw and its "O" ring. put them in a plastic bag ,those last two items and twist some plumbers faucet grease over them to keep them from drying out ...then if You or someone you know needs one you have one .and if you still have the pump body stash it also. frozen pipes can dial all the way back to a boiler....
the jingling noise is likely a piece of solder...that then thrashes the heck out of the impeller if it makes it to the circ..if not, it will continue to live in the pipe until you :Liberate: it.0 -
I did try to change the speed, the noise just goes up or down but does not go away. I replaced it with a B&G NRF-22, which has roughly the same curve as speed#2, and the noise went away.
Unfortunately I have no other way to test the pump. All I can say is, it makes a noise when another pump put in the same spot does not.

My 15-58's were making noises that...
... the rep had never heard before. Turns out, they were full of air and once they were bled, they returned to a quiet state of bliss. I would have your professional purge the system extensively, perhaps then the heating system will perform as intended.
Another thing to look for is if anythign is lodged in the impeller or whatnot. Properly clamping the pipes before and after the pump may also help.0 -
any one have a 15-58
that seemed to loose power..... I just had a grunfos 3 yrs. old fail. The funny thing was, the way it died. This was a burnham we repiped to make it pump away. We installed a new 15-58 circ on a 3/4" monoflo loop system. This is a very small house with seven convectors......I get there and they had no heat all weekend, they blead the convectors and cranked the t'stat but it just would not get warm. I find the heat only heating the first 2 convectors and the return, just getting warm......I could hear the circ spining but it just would not move the water....Change the circ to a new 15-58 and the water flew around the loop..... I think the circ could have been getting too hot....the boiler was getting 200 deg and at the top of the supply pipe it can get hotter. mellow0 -
Sounds like
a noisy flow check to me.
Got any?

It's part of the shutoff valve, so the check valve in the circulator was removed.0 -
have encountered that minor technicality....
i boink the pump with my rubber hammer they lent me when i escaped from Bellview by the Bridge:) seriously though take out the big shiney screw next time boink the recirc with a rubber hammer then put a flat head screwdriver in the opening slowly...,if it doesnt make a bdrrrrrruping noise ...It ain spinning.
so the moral of the story is if boinking it with a rubber hammer dont get it play with the screwdriver a bit:))))sorry...i have a really wack sence of humor.0 -
Broken shaft?
the shaft can and do break from time to time. Check and see if a ball of solder or copper chip is in the impeller.
They can be noisey just prior to breaking as the debris gets the old garbage disposal ride
