junk in the water, skimmed the boiler

I'm not an expert in what lurks inside steam boilers. I was at a job we did last year, the pipes where making a terrible melody. I saved some of the water I skimmed in a glass. Now that the water has settled, it looks like dark red fine sand at the bottom the glass. What is this stuff?
