hey, I cry as loud as anyone when I have to shell out dough to, say, my auto mechanic. But I never would complain. The service is good, he's a block from my house and they fix things right the first time almost all the time, and if he loses money and goes out of business THEN what do I do

I don't know about anyone else but as a homeowner after reading a couple of the recent posts about helpers and hard to heat rooms I am embarassed about the involved homeowners described behavior in trying to beat down the price or simply not pay at all. Unfortunatly this behavior appears to be all too common. Let me say this. To have the type of work that is done by the professionals here on the wall and to have it done CORRECTLY, IS NOT CHEAP. To have any heating system perform as designed and remain safe to operate it must be installed correctly. The comfort and the safety of your families are at stake. It takes time and expertise to install these systems right. And if it is not done right little things like carbon monoxide production, fires and explosions which kill people and destroy property occur. How much is the comfort and safety of yourself and your families worth? You are are paying for the skill and expertise of these people to do it right the first time. And that is always cheaper in the long run. One more thing, these people take the time to answer the questions posted here on the wall by homeowners. If you call them as a result to do work for you pay them what they are worth. They are going to save you money in fuel costs when they are done.

Stuff like that happens all the time. Far too many people don't know the difference between price and value. Anyone can get a cheap furnace installed. But does it work? if not, what has the homeowner gained? Some people do make a living out of beating some hapless contractor out of a few thousand. They are out there. You get what you pay for.
